Pretty obvious by reading your post.  wink_face.gif

Anyway, the K701 is not better to a good extent than K550, they're in the same league in terms of overall sound resolution, refinement, etc.  In fact if someone gave both to me, and I didn't know about them before, I'd say K550 are the more expensive headphones.

They're extremely similar (much more similar than certain frequency response graphs might suggest), when I first got my K550's the first thing that fell on my mind was "closed K701". And it really does sound almost identical.

What K550 does much better is build quality, isolation and comfort.  Where its slightly better and its noticeable on some music is slightly more bass extension and low bass (<60hz) presence. Mids are I'd say identical on both, typical AKG mids, and highs might be a tiny bit more forward on K701's, but K550's have a spike around 10k which makes them sound "sharper".   Anyway,  to me, its like basically the same headphone, but one tunes for audiophiles (K701) and other tuned for studio with its slightly more analytical and flat sound, and good isolation.

I know exactly what you mean... I found it very interesting from the start. However, I don't think its that closed... the rear side of the driver is completely open, and also the rest of the shell.

Well, I made it clear from the start, I havent heard the K550. I know the K550 are pretty impressive against the initial expectations and I know that they share some things with the K701s. However, I doubt that their soundstage is anything close to that of the K701.

Hi everybody. What do you think about combo Odac+o2+k701s? I'm gonna buy this setup.

hello. Anybody here?

We're here.... but possibly no one who has heard the exact set up you're asking about.

I'm here! O2+ODAC+K701. Exact setup you're talking about. And it works great.

i have only tried the O2 + K701 combo, and it works quite well. sounds really clean and detailed.

meanwhile, i am right now listening to Bravo V3 + Encore ENMA + K701 setup, and i'm pretty much satisfied with it.
the midrange sounds ok, and the bass is quite sufficient for me.
it sounds airy with above average soundstage.

i'm not keen on getting a new amp anytime soon, but i'm saving up for it in case a good deal pops up somewhere.

That's great to hear. I purchased an O2 and ODAC, and my K 701 is coming through the mail soon.

That being said, has anyone here tried the K 701 with a Bottlehead Crack OTL amp?

I'm interested in a tube amp for the novelty of it. Either a Bottlehead or Schiit tube amp are in my thoughts on a tube amp.

Does the K 701 pair well with tube amps? It was to my understanding that tube amps have a high output impedance and the K 701 is rated at ~62 ohms. Technically, shouldn't a solid state amp be more suitable?

wow,  i really need to read some posts. Right now my choices are SR225i, HD598, and k701. I know k701 needs amps and all sorts of things that I don't have now, and the other two do not need these. But I think I will enjoy the slow and fun process of improving the sound quality of K701. That's the fun part and hope my wallet thinks the same way too. biggrin.gif

Question: Is the K701 any different from the q701?

From what I read, no. They think Q701 has slightly stronger bass compare with K701 and that's it.

Hello all.

I am no technical expert on amps but I'm pretty sure there is massive variation in output characteristics, tube & SS. K701 is somewhat picky though IME and generally can be a marmite can (love or hate). Personsl Testing is highly recommended.

Does these require a good amount of power like the Qs?

mine sounded thin with the Asgard solid state, but excellent with the 2 hybrid amps.  I listen mostly to jazz and blues with them

Hey guys

sorry to pop in unannounced but since i gave away my beyers (they weren't my kind of sound) i've been wondering what to replace them with.

my friend has the K601 which i actually didn't mind at all so im wondering what's the K701 compared to them (i'm just in need of a comparison with a headphone i've heard)

the other treble happy headphones i've listened to is the Audio technica ATH-AD700.

cheers
