Second Gilmore Recieved! - Page 2

Has anyone heard any news of a balanced input Gilmore v2 he plans to release?
Mine came today, the new box looks good, the sound seems really excellent. I've tried Senn HD580 and AKG K501 and it works well with both. This is the best sound (by far) I've gotten with the K501.

Thanks Justin, it was worth the wait.

zbuddah, I have no other headamps with me to compare it do. It blows away my memories if that means anything--when I get home in a week and a half I'll voice some comparisions.

jamont, I'm really interested in the sound your getting from the k-501s. I left my pair home with my little brother, and am looking very forward to hearing them with the gilmore. If you wanna mention some of the things you noted that would be splendid

This is first impressions only, it's been up and running less than an hour. But I'm finding a lot more heft, punch, weight, whatever in the sound, it's really solid at the low end. There is also plenty of detail in the highs too.

Good to hear a lot of amps have gone out!!

Gopher- I have to say I was surprised that the bass felt a little light to me early on given the design of this amp. I undoubtedly heard gradual improvements and then a huge change in time. Now the bass is one of the best things I like about this amp. At first I thought it was perhaps my Senn HD600's or Cardas cable that still needed break in, though they had a good number of hours on them. But that was ruled out when I inserted the Gilmore into my 2-channel system and had to turn the volume up on my powered sub. But then, as I described, one day the bass just came through big time and all has been great since. Who knows. One thing could be I had primarily been using Grado's (as I had no amp for my Senn's) and was used to their fat, big and warm mid bass and not to mention my two channel systems as of late have been on the warmer, fuller side too. I'm convinced it was break in though.

Anyhow, couldn't agree more with you about note decay and the fast, toe tapping sound. I have been just addicted to this thing. It just sounds so balanced, fast and flat out fun. By the way I also heard some sibilance early on to some degree, that's completely gone now and has been for a while. I'm about 225 hours now.

overall I think it's sounding very smooth and very detailed, with a really transparant mid range--yet it is suprisingly forgiving of what I've thrown at it

That's a good summary right there, I agree. I felt it was a tad forward early on and a little ragged around the edges, but not anymore!

Man, if my amp wasn't coming in tomorrow I would aviod this thread like the plague. Man, I can't wait to unwrap and unbos that thing tomorrow. It is the Max version, so I am hoping that it just totally blows me away with its sound. I don't think I will be disappointed either as Justin says he will be replacing his V2 with a V2 Max after listening to the unit he built for me.

It's here!

But I can't listen to it until tomorrow. I have to finish writing my paper and prepare for an oral presentation. Life sucks.

Also, my Virtual Dynamics Audition power cable showed up today too. I can't listen to that either.

I still haven't listened to them; my will power is amazing. One time, I went for almost 4 days without visiting Head-Fi.

Doug, you seem to be the only one with the Max (or am I mistaken)?
anyway, whats the difference between the max and the regular v2?

v2 max

The max has a stepped attenuator volume control that should give a noticeable improvement in sound quality. To fit the attenuator required a bigger case, so thats different. The bigger case then allowed different and better caps to be used. The max has 6 inputs/outputs he will configure any way you want. I am having mine done with 2 inputs, 2 active preamp outputs, 1 loop out and 1 passive output. Furthermore, mine is being built so plugging in the headphones disables the active preamp outputs. I also had a gain switch added to mine(extra cost $35) to lower the preamp outputs gain, so it will work with the very high output gain stage from my modded sony scd 555es sacd player. I think that covers everything.

Once I finally get myself a decent speaker system, I'm gonna have to upgrade to the Max.

thanks for that sacd lover
i'm curious how it sounds compared to the v2

Yeah I know, I am anxiously awaiting its arrival. I will have my gilmore v1 to compare it with, and I will give my impressions once it shows up.
