7200 will save alot of your time and wont have a noticeable effect on battery life. go to Newegg.com and find a 200gb 7200 seagate, apple will sell you the cheapest thing they can get their hands on for triple what its worth.

I was looking at an older pair of drives where the difference was greater, but the 7200.2 still consumes 33% more power on active idle than the 5400.4.

Apple's Macbook Pro doesn't have a openable slot on the bottom as opposed to most of the notebooks. The only way to install a hard drive is to screw open the keyboard plate and work your way in. It's totally do-able but it will void the warranty if there's any unauthorised work done to the Macbook Pro. They may still cover the warranty if it's something totally different component that's causing a trouble but I wouldn't bet on it.

It also takes the 5400 rpm drive longer to perform the same task, so your battery is dying while you sit and wait for windows to open. Personally I dont have one minute of my life to wait for a pokey machine to perform a task just to save a few bucks or a few minutes of battery time, do you?

It may seem a lot, but the 0.2W difference is dwarfed by the power draw of the rest of the system. You won't notice the difference in battery savings.

500gb 5400rpm

just wait a little for the 9.5mm 500gb discs that run at 5400.
the hitachi travelstar 5k500 that is 12.5mm high seems not slower than existing 7200 RPM. And 500gb are SO useful (movies, pics).
my 7200 seagate gets easily crammed which slows it down much more.

i was gonna get one of the 500gb bigger laptop drives for my optical bay, but the £/mb was too high

i will always choose seagate for my primary drive, havent had a fsilure yet

on the power issue, just think of the screen, when its closed it lasts ages, when its not, dies pretty quick, esp 1920 res

im also a bit shocked that the mac doesnt have an easily accesible hard drive bay, keep away from those, laptops are hard enough to upgrade anyway

oh and on another post: when you take anyting off/apart/etc on a mac, including replacing the HD, it voids the entire warranty.

they'll fix something.. but its gonna cost a pretty penny.

wtf are 1/2 of u guys talking about.

APPLE will NOT void your warranty if you change hdd or ram. I have personally asked, called, checked online with them.
I went into the apple store 1/2 a year ago to have them check out my macbook (just for the hell of it)...
The guy opened up the bay, took out the ram and said, "These ram aren't apple original ones."
I said, "I know, they are authorized ram that an apple reseller sold to me." (cause technically, all DDR2 SODIMM 667mhz ram are compatible with apple)
The guy said, "Oh yeah, okay, lemme help you check on that"

I also had the 250gb hdd installed in my macbook, they were all nice, after doing a diagnostic test, they even helped me replace my lcd screen and cleaned it.

To be on the safe side, just keep the original HD, RAM and put it in before there is a service isssue. I do not remember any seals that need to be broken.
With the macbook, swapping the HD is very straightforward. On a Macbook Pro however, changing the HD involves dis-assembling the case, so be careful.
Actually, my experience with Apple service has been positive. In general they do not insist on stupid fine print.
A note on seagate: I had a bad crash - even a professional recovery service was helpless. The head shattered the disc.

Actually I got the 5K500 quite cheap 190$ from a guy that was not aware it does not fit in most notebooks (eg only Macbook Pro 19) due to its increased height. I guess you could find more such examples as Hitachis advertising is a bit misleading.
