Which 3 Headphones To Keep? (Decision Made!) - Page 3

Just based on what I read on these boards:

K1000
K501
K240 DF

Oh and I dislike K280 Thats why I traded my to Fitz in the first place

The results are still sticking to what I figured the public opinion would be, so I have proven my hypothesis correct.

The K1000 are such an obvious choice that I'd almost lean away from it, and as long as I had good speakers around I doubt I'd miss them too much. All the reports of muddiness and "musicality" of the dual-driver AKGs would lead me to want to strike the K280/290 as well. But then 3 versions of the K240 would be a little too similar to one another as choices.

So, in the end I'd go K241, Sextett, and K290.

Predictions for Fitz: one sextett, we know. I'm betting the K290 is in there as well, he loves those things. Finally, I believe the K401 is his favorite version of that frame, so it's either that or the K1000. Am I in the ballpark, Fitz?
Actually I was initially going to sell the K1000 for sure, but decided to keep it in the running because it is the closest sound to my main speaker rig (except for the bass, my speakers have lots of power even in the subsonic range). Even though I haven't decided which of a couple configurations I will choose, I am scared by the rest of your assessment... you are not just in the ballpark, you are in my seat! Have you been spying on me again Erik? Maybe I should change the locks.

I am not telling you to go and buy GS1000, however it would compliment K1000 even better, imo.

Good luck
I will never own a Grado product again. It's not even a remote possibility.

Where did you hear that? I like the K1000 very much once I learned how much better they sound with the earspeakers fully extended.

Kind of off-topic but what's the difference between the K290 Stereo and K290 Surround? Would using the Surround with a normal amp basically be the same as the Stereo?

Basically.

The differences are the cable (surround has dual-entry 8-conductor cable, stereo has single-entry 3-conductor cable), driver orientation (surround has them horizontal for front/back, stereo has them vertical like K280), and the stereo model has a sticker saying "K290 Stereo" where the earcups normally say "Surround".

So Kx00/x01 frame is boring? I was actually thinking that one of these (K500 maybe) would be a good compliment to my Stats and Floats, I guess not

Did you ever get a chance to listen to them through a surround amp?

I wouldn't describe them as exciting but I find them quite engaging all the same.

I voted for k240(sextett), K501 en K1000. Thats the headphones I would like to own haha, so actually this is not a good move. But I'm enjoying the K85 way to much!!
K500, whichever Sextett you prefer, and the K1000.

Do not sell your K1000s, unless to me for £50.

Not to me. It is a bit distant and airy sounding, but I wouldn't call it boring.

I only ended up with a surround amp after I'd sold them, since I designated a small portion of the money to improving my speaker rig. (though I got a bigger impovement by using cinder blocks as stands instead of the cheap partsexpress stands, and that cost nothing :-/)

Well I don't think you'll be able to get those 3 for as cheap as you got the K85, Victor, unless maybe the gods really really like you.

50 quid will only get you a picture of my K1000.

If it was me, I'd keep the Sextett, the K401, and the K290. Although I've not heard the K290 or the K241, so that's just a guess on my part of which I'd prefer. I had the K501 and sold it because they're not that much better than the K400, K401, and K500, and go for at least twice as much money. I'd sell the K1000 for the same reason (in comparison to a speaker rig). As other people have stated, the DF probably sounds close enough to the Sextett to not need both. I wouldn't be surprised if the K241 is the same. I pretty sure I remember reading a post by Fitz that said he likes the K290 better than the K280. I'd like to hear one since I have the K280 and enjoy it.

I was originally thinking the same thing, but the similarities between it and my main speaker rig except for the bass led me to want to keep it as a "familiar" sound when I can't turn up the speakers.

Yeah, I think the K290 is what the K280 should have been, not to suggest that I find the K280 lacking. The person I sold my K290 surround to agreed with me about the K290 being an improvement/refinement over the K280.

I have Fitz's K290 Surround, but unfortunately I don't have a surround amp either. I was in the process of buying a surround speaker set up, but I've been sidetracked by the Wii.

I just noticed the K400 is the only member of the Kx00/x01 family absent, did you have a particular issue with them Fitz?

How do the K85 compare to your K601?

I already sold my last pair of K400s. I had previously sold my other pairs of them before this process, and forgot I didn't have any spares left. Oops.
