Sorry, I missed the follow-ups.

Dave put in a PCM2707 chip (instead of the standard PCM2704) -- which he says he feels adds a trace more warmth. He also applied a mod he's been working to lower the noise floor.

I did try and pump him for details of the latter but he pled trade secrets. Should be getting the unit in the mail this week, so I'll have a good listen before I give it to my friend.

The Nuforce Icon fits your budget at $250.
It will also work as an integrated amp and does a nice job of powering some of my home speakers (including some bigger floorstanders that I should not even try hooking it up too because they are not that efficient). Very good as a headphone amp too.

I think emu0404 is perfect for a musician because of the recording and sound editing function.
