Balanced UE's

Thread Starter
Okay I know this is going to sound kind of funny, but I couldn't help myself (admit it, you've thought this before too).

Would HeadRoom consider recabling some of the high end UE's (ie the 10's or 11's) to balanced cabling? Would this offer some sonic improvement on these already legendary custom 'phones? Wouldn't that be really cool?

I suppose it would be strange having connections that are twice as large as the phones themselves, but it might sound really good...

If this hasn't already been pulled off - I hope I'm the first to try it! (as soon as I've built up my wallet!)

Thoughts anyone?

oh, ive thought about making this for myself. and i already bought a spare cable to do it.

ill probably get UE customs sometime late this yr or early next yr, to test how they are balanced

apuresound is already working on the balanced recabling for UE customs from what I know.

I use my IEMS in a portable system. Not sure if there are many portable amps that can do balanced. But as my wife points out ... I am usually wrong

IEM's, especially the UE11's are incredibly sensitive, unless you have the gain level in the balanced amp set very very low, you're going to have maybe 1 or 2 clicks of volume level if you use stepped attentuators.

Joshua Tree Attenuator is my planned solution.

Just make sure the amp builder in question knows you are planning on using IEM's so you can have a usable gain level.

I've actually thought about doing this before. I'd probably end up making a dedicated unity gain balanced buffer specifically for the UE-11's. I wonder what kind of improvements could be had from doing this though, if it would be worth the added cost and effort.

If memory serves, we actually tried "balancing " ear canal headphones some time ago -- I believe it was the Etymotic ER-4S.... I recall it being something of a fairly laborious re-cabling process & the end sonic results were, er, "underwhelming" to say the least!
