Need OS X 10.4...

fortney, did you do complete erase of the HD before install? If not, that would be the first thing to try. Boot from the install DVD, go to Disc Utility and write zeroes all over your internal HD, to make sure any bad sectors get mapped out. I do this to any new Mac or external HD before I start using them.

The faulty 265 DIMM - better take it out, for the time being at least. You'll be amazed how many problems you would think of as "mysterious" are caused by bad RAM. I know, a replacement for such old chip can be expensive now, but do remove it at least until the OS upgrade is done.

System profiler message - could that be "No firewire devices found"?

Anyway, do you have an external HD that you could spare? It would need to have a firewire connection and better be powered, although a portable FW HD will work too. You'd just have to keep it connected to you Mac and use as your main HD. An of-the-shelf copy of Tiger (the one you bought, I understand) should install on such drive without problem.
If you do not have one, I see there are some good deals on amazon right now, like this "Seagate STM302503OTA3E1-RK Maxtor OneTouch 4 250 GB" for $68.66 (wow, maybe I should get one?..). It is not 100% clear, though, that this one does have a FireWire port, and you need that... Well, there are some other good ones in the neighborhood of $100. Wall-powered, again, are better for this purpose. We've had great success booting OS X from external HDs from Lacie, Maxtor, and Wiebe Tech.
