wow you're right I've just tried to A/B both my headphones, and my HD650s ( with pretty worn pads ) had a 'thicker' sound, the signature was more lush sounding, while the HD600s were slightly more neutral. However my HD600 are defoamed ( foam removed from earcups ) so I guess it will also increase the neutral quality of the headphones. What's the difference between using a custom cable and a balanced one for the sennheisers? Will using balanced cables improve detail? So far I'm not able to detect a distinct difference between listening to the HD600s unbalanced and the HD650s balanced
He's probably thinking of the HD580J. Wasn't that the revision before the rebranded, speckled-chassis HD600 came out?

I have a four year old pair of HD650 and recently bought a second pair for my computer setup. The second pair has a little more than 100 hours on them and are pretty much settled now (to my ears).
The difference is still obvious though: the new ones sound distinctly "snappier" and more forward than the old ones. Just to check I asked my wife if she heard a difference, and without having any idea of which pair was old or new or what I was referring to she said the the old one was "darker" and "mellower". Could be the age difference, but I wonder... |
True. Although I hear the opposite; the flatter, older pads are usually slower and darker on both my HD600 and SR225; similar thing with a couple of K701's I listened to. Not that it felt 'slower' or less 'snappy' but the soundstage wasn't as deep and sounds a lot like the HD600 on new pads. @Kees try pressing either closer to your ears and see if the sound changes more towards the other pair's.
