Something is deadly wrong......

I compared DT880 and DT990, and found out DT880 has much more bass than DT990. It is a completely opposite what others are saying in this forum. The more surprising thing is that the DT990 has very similar sound signature compared to K701!.

To my ears the DT990 also has more treble than DT880.

Do my ears have problems? DT990 or DT880 defected? ????

You're right.

Yes. Very wrong. DT990 is also a bit brighter than DT880 to my ears....

DT990 has not fully burned yet. That may explain this?

Any chance you have the leather pads on them? I had a chance to hear the "leathered" DT880 (newer edition) the other day and they were most certainly a lot bassier than the previous "veloured" 880 I heard. It also muffled some of the sparkle I seem to recall from my previous encounter.

I agree that the DT990 have a bit more prominent highs.
And I also agree with the fact that leather pads make a difference.

one thing I did was exchange my DT880's velour pad to new ones. The strength of the pads was dying (thus my ears almost touch the drivers) so I exchanged the new ones. Let me exchange the pads of DT990 and DT880 now...

so what's the update? <<-- adding more suspense to this deadly situation

First 770 have less bass than 650, now 880 have more basss than 990...strange day!

Yes, the pads are what causing my DT880 boomy. I wondered why DT880 was suddenly boomy to my ears....

The replacement pads I bought for my DT880/DT990 and the pads with my new DT990 are different! I put them on my DT990 and the bass becomes too uncontrollable to listen!

The replacement pads are for DT770. Perhapes DT880/990 pads are different from DT770s? But we heard that they are all same...

Update : From Headroom's site.
----
....Will also retro-fit the beyerdynamic DT880 and DT990 models too although the DT770's overall outer earpad sizing is a tiny increment different; They'll still work fine though!
----
See? even the sizes are different. I also can tell the inside materials are different as well. The sound when I put the headphones on my head is slightly different.

Update 2 : I also compared with the old DT880 pads. Yes. the old DT880 and new DT990 pads are the same ones, but they are not same as the replacement pads.

OK. further update.

I searched online for a while, and found out that the pads for 770 and 880/990 are DIFFERENT!. The part number of 770 is 926.660, while 880/990 is 926.679!

I will order 926.679 today if I have some time.

Even still, if the DT990s are using the original pads they should not have the same kind of bass as the K701...
Wait... Is the bass better to you though with these pads and the DT880? You said it was stronger, I sometimes think that is a good thing.

For some songs, yes. For most of music, no....

DT990s become simply unlistenable with these replacement pads.

Ok thanks. I'm not much of a DT990 guy anyway, prefer the DT880.

That makes me wonder how the dt770 would sound with 880/990 pads.
