Sony MDR-EX700LP - Page 9

Nope, fit was fine. I've been using IEMs for the past 8 years or so, so I know a thing or two about achieving the ideal fit. However, the low bass capabilities of the EX700 (at least IMO) don't measure up to that of the SA6s, and certainly not that of the Atrio's. I'm a bit of a basshead, but the EX700's didn't measure up for me.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Hi Robo,

That is fair enough... I just read a couple of reviews of the Atrios, and see that they are cited as having more (deeper) bass than any other IEM out there, so - with that in mind, I'll agree with you that 'ultra low' bass is not there on the EX700s (or most other 'phones lol)

...Hmm, now the dance / trance side of my brain wants to try out the Atrios.. Damn head-fi!!

I would concur with robojack regarding the mid-bass of the EX700. I think the sound engineers for it need to listen to the Atrio &/or Image bass to get a better idea of how I think it should sound.

Put simiply I really like the bass of the EX700, but I would love it if it was like the Image.

I listen predominately to hip-hop in case anyone wonders.

Hi you Head Fi's,
I purchased a MDR-EX700LP here in Panama form Sony Center for US229.00 + 5% tax. I own a SuperFi 5Pro which I had to send to UE in warranty because of a cable and cable socket issue. Fi5 I like them very much in use as IEM when playing Bass Guitar with my Rock and Salsa band, but listening to my iPod Nano 4GB 2gen, I felt that I needed a little more treble. I use treble boost in the EQ, but then in certain song there is a little lack of bass. So I wasn't 100% satisfied. With the MDR-EX700, I'm very satisfied with the bass they produce and the hi's are much better now. They feel more open and wider, sound stage wise. The Fi5 have a good tight bass, but the Sony's go lower in the frequency range without getting muddy and produce an excellent low mid bass. Sony say that they go down to 5Hz, which I don't believe but the sound like the have a sub woofer on so it could be. Compared to the Fi5. I can hear more detail now. The mids are excellent, the voices the guitars, the pianos, everything is there and very well balanced (I listen to a lot of Rock, Jazz fusion and some older Salsa music). On the bright side, I would say, the treble is good, not perfect, but good. The cymbals and Hi hats sound quite natural and brighter than the Fi5pro. I had the opportunity to listen to the Shure ES530 and would say they compare a little, but the Sony are brighter and for nearly half the price, the Sony MDR-EX700LP is a much better buy. I likes the bass and mid's of the Shure, but like the Fi5pro, they lack treble. Both sound very warm, but a lot of songs need this extra treble the EX700 deliver. I really don't know much about burning in time, but out of the box they sound very good. What I don't like is the J cable, which I changes its form with a little tape and created a Y without modifying any cable connection and it work very good. I would have preferred the cables going over my ears, or the use of both ways. In live playing, it is more comfortable to use them over the ears. Not that it is not possible, but in this position the casing of the phones make a little uncomfortable pressure in the outer ear.
I really do like these Phones, and for the price it's a steal.
Regards to All

Hello audiophile friend!
Do you know if EX700 can be modded to increase the bass? Like:
http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f4/son...thread-193464/

There is a small hole on the top of each earphone that seems to be an air bass port. I belive if you put a tape over it, the bass will increase a lot, especially the sub-bass!!!
I wish if someone could do this and tell me if it works, because I want to buy it if it gains some great sub-bass like EX-85 modded!!!

Theres no difference in bass amount when the top hole is covered. However I found that these are bassy enough for my taste

I agree with coolchu001, there is no difference in closing these vents and for my taste the bass is excellent. As I stated in my personal impression in this tread, the bass sounds like a sub bass but with definition in the low mid range.

The bass gets meatier after you've run a few hours of music through them. The sibilance smooths out as well. What I would suggest to new owners of the EX700 is to NOT listen to them until you've ran about 5 hours or so (at minimum) at a nice loud (not earsplitting loud though) volume. The fresh of of the box sibilance is very very very harsh and the bass also seems to get masked away by the high end. They are currently my favourite pair of in-ears as they are a perfect match for punk, rock, metal, pop, just about anything I throw at them. For jazz I like the smoother warmer sound from my Klipsch Custom-2 though.

The EX700s 6 months

Ok so obviously I kinda dropped off the face of the planet for awhile because I haven't posted in forever. I still need to go back and read it in its entirety I stopped following it around July. I still love my EX700s. I have read that some find that they feel the sibilance didn't go away for them. I find them to be pretty detailed on the upper end without sibilance. Of course the mids and bass is, IMHO, outstanding. Still my favorite IEM six months after buying them. No hint of any problems with the cables at all, except for the design of course. Glad to see there is still some interest in these IEMs.

I was recommended by a friend to purchase the ex700, but I have a question regarding the difference between the ex700LP and the ex700SL. Moreover, when I was doing my research, I found out that this headphone has been out for nearly a year. Is the ex700 still one of the best out there? Do you guys have any suggestions?

Thank you. I appreciate the help.

Get out the foam in the tunnel of the sony ex700lp and you get a more clear sound and performance of the headphone.

Well this is amusing, since everybody knows that eBay is rife with EX700 fakes...

I actually picked up a pair of genuine ones off of ebay for about $100. (Yes, they're real, and they're spectacular). In the brief quest to assure myself of their authenticity, I got a pretty good feel for what real and fake EX700s should look like.

If you go onto the SonyStyle site, under their reviews, the images provided by their first reviewer are of most likely a pair of fake headphones. Check out the grey metal insets, they're completely glossy in his picture while the real ones are matte. In addition, the larger Sony logo is silkscreened in instead of raised metal.

That's right. Even Sony has pictures of fake headphones on their site. Amazing.

If you're wondering, I've seen two distinct models of fakes wandering around. One is like those pictured above, with glossy grey bits and no raised sony panel. The other one has a actual inset metal grey bit, but there are two visible tabs holding it in, whereas there are none in the real thing.

Fakes:

Shiny with silkscreened logos fake.

Matte with tabs holding the insert on fake.
