I'm still running a Marantz CD-63SE in my 2 channel system and have been quite pleased with it's performance. Back in the day it was considered one of the better values for decent sound and I've had no complaints about how it's performed for me.
I haven't used it often to drive headphones directly, but IIRC there weren't a lot of volume control options. I found a level that worked OK, but if you're hoping to drive your phones directly it might be worth checking out the details on that based on the particular unit you're considering. It also likely depends on the phones being driven, I was using Sennheiser HD-580s, something with higher efficiency may provide more volume setting options where it's a total non-issue.
