P. Millett Tube Hybrid Amp

Has anyone tried building the tube hybrid amp by Peter Millett in a point-to-point wiring config? I would like to try but have no clue where to start, particularly where to place the parts in the chassis and how to layout the connections. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Yup. Also are there any advantages to point-to-point hook up vs. PCB. Its obviously much easier to build with the PCB?

Point to point is fun, when you've got experience. Not to say not to do it, 'cause experience comes from doing.

Print out the schematic, read it, live with it for a bit, get to know it. Then pick a starting point, like a Input and start wiring. The pcb photo shows one way to lay it out. This here show's the ancient art of bread-boarding and is a good way to get familiar with tube electronics, with out commiting to a chassis.

Looks like a neat amp.

Hmmm, a very interesting and practical approach to bulding DIY from schematics. Thanks! What do you call the tube sockets and where can I get them, model no, part no., etc.?

If you want to learn about point-to-point wiring, build a Foreplay. It is inexpensive ($150), a good design, and comes with detailed instructions. If you have problems or questions, the folks in the Bottlehead forum will help you out.

Thanks for the tip. The success of my Foreplay build actually inspired me to look into building the tube hybrid amp for a headphone rig for my PC.

Nothing like a little Foreplay before really diving in...

Sorry, couldn't resist...

I like mine a lot, though it's on a PCB. It's a nice little amp. I have not got a lot of time with tube headphone gear, so I don't really have a good basis for tube comparisons.

It's pretending to be a super-mini-altoid-mint tube amp. But yes, this is actually my amp. Presently residing in a serpac case per Pete's spec.

Wow, nice job ! I had no idea it was that small.

Mine is completely finished, except for the tube sockets...somehow managed to forget to order them.

I'll report back in a few days....

Actually, it's a giant mint tin, and crummy photochopping.

I'm greatly enjoying mine.

Though I'm anxious to compare it to the Gilmore V2
