Brand new toy: K271 - Page 4

Of course you find better in mids in open fons (DT880, K*01, etc.) but closed fons without recessions (A900 & derivates, DT770, HD25, K81, etc.) or queekiness (many ATs) seem to be quite difficult to build.

Taking into consideration that the K271 is damn closed, I personally regard the mids as absolutely world class. Comparing it with top tier open fons is comparing peas and apples IMO.

I will be picking up the K272HD soon. For some reason, the availability date gets modified every couple of days at all the Finnish shops, so I don't know how long the wait will be. Anyway, I don't think it's time to conclude that this new headphone is "the same as" the K271S with only cosmetic differences.
MKII is nothing but different color scheme.
HD is a consumer line of products, versus Studio (Pro) (271S, 240S, 141S) which will stay in production. Same platform, more attractive for non studio use package.

Do you have a picture of the pads?

The foam is black(ish) and harder than the DT880/DT70/DT531 pad.

Those definitely look like DT660 pads. It's more of a velvet material than a velour. It's a thick, heavy cloth, and not as plush. Am I describing what you have? It definitely looks like it. I have a DT660 and a DT990 and the pad differences are very easy to tell just by the feel.

So, you say they sound good on the K271? I'm going to have to buy an extra set of pads then. Unfortunately, I've had no luck getting through to Beyer about them. I tried some time ago to get some extra pads for my DT660, and I kept getting bounced around.

I'd really love to know what those pads are 660, 770, etc.?

Yes, holland, I find your description quite accurate. Same dimensions as DT880 pad (maybe 1-2 mm bigger inner diameter).

As worst-case scenario, I can send them to Beyer and ask for identification. But not before the original AKG pads have arrived!!!! I'd rather eat my remaining hair than going back to the stock pleather pads.

An intriguing way of stating a preference

Ok guys, the original AKG velours pads have arrived and are in usage right now. Guess I still prefer the whatever-they-are-Beyerpads, as they prefer better soundscape and better comfort. Soundwise, I can't resolve greater differences. The AKG pads provide better isolation though.

They will get better after some break in, I found them quite hard right out of the box.

Break in would be negative in this case - if the AKG velour pads get softer, the soundscape will collapse even more.

I took them with me to a greater meeting, and we all agreed that the Beyer velour pads sound better than the AKG velour pads. Not night-and-day-wise, but noticeable.

Can you please describe the difference? And by the way, have you identified beyer pads already?

As already mentioned, the Beyer velours pads provide better soundscape and much more comfort. The price that is to pay is less isolation.

Will take a week or two to get them identified, I guess.

I have the same problem with the K271 as Nickchen.
The stock earpads as well the velour pads are too small for my ears. Or in other words, my ears are too big
Besides the yet unknown Beyer pads that Nickchen uses, I found that the DT 770 pads are also a much better fit.

I had sent the velours pads to Beyer and asked for identification. Got them back yesterday, the sales & distribution lady of Beyerdynamic regards them as DT880/DT990 edition 05 pads.

That must be totally wrong, because my buddie's DT880 sounded absolutely catastrophical with these pads (that is why I got them for free).

I'd say the Beyer sales & distribution lady couldn't really be bothered to look seriously after that. Not an entirely untypical attitude for sales & distribution members...

However, the pads will remain unidentified. That is really a shame, as they really sound better than the AKG velours pads.
