Many have made the argument against the Ultrasone Edition 9's writing that they are colored and have a sort of plasticine quality. On the contrary those in favor claim that it is the product of bad recording as these headphones are very revealing. Having worked along side an audio engineer in a recording studio for quite some time, I can claim with certainty that the second statement is closer to true. This quality you are hearing is the result of compression. While most tracks aren't overly compressed making this characteristic almost unnoticeable, those songs which are highly compressed I find rather unbearable. Despite this (flaw?) the coloration (not to be confused with a recessed midrange) is most definitely a product of the recording. Most symphonic recordings don't exhibit this coloration because they aren't compressed. Yet the lack of midrange makes the ed9's less preferable than certain other phones for this genre. Certain rock, new pop, etc. recordings with little or no compression reveal without flaw the true beauty of these cans. If you own a pair or get a chance to listen check out Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo Child (slight return) or other Hendrix, Keith Jarrett's Koln, early Miles Davis. It's a truly amazing and unparalleled experience.
