Alo Sennheiser vs G1000 vs Equinox vs alo 701

Thread Starter
I have been reading this forum for a month now, and I need to make a choice between hd650/k701 and gs1000, which I can not do.
What would be the best setup for listening classical, jazz maybe some rock.
My setup is ipod touch with Iqube portable amp.
I got my choices down to above headphones.
Also, is it a good idea to invest in aftermarket cables with just a portable amp that runs of ipod ?
I'll appreciate any help on this issue

Once I receive my max'd Woo6, things should get even better.

I would advise you when thinking about plopping down that kind of coin for some cans, let your ears be your guide. The kind of system they'll be dropping into makes a world of difference as well.
Have you had the stock K701's before hearing the modded ones?

For old jazz the HD650 and the GS1000 have the best sound signature IMO.
But I seriously doubt the iQube can drive either of them. You will get sound, but not the quality normally associated with these phones. You will want to invest in a (much) better amp I think.

well, that does not sound to good for me, I was just trying to get the best out of my portable rig, and I was under impression that Iqube has no problem driving 650, since it is class d amp and as for reviews of GS1000 it did not look like it demanded much power from the amp as well.
Unfortunately I do not have an ability to audition any headphones around where I live, so I just really need some advice from people who maybe use it with their portable setup

Yes I have, and still own the stock pair.

Since I haven't heard the iQube this is pure speculation, but you might want to consider the Denon D5000. They have a sound signature that I think would suit your taste in music very well and are rather easy to drive (106 dB ; 25 Ohm).

Cool, what were the noticeable improvements?

Recommend you figure out what basic sound quality you like; can pick up both Senn 600's and K701's new on eBay for around $550 (combined total). Don't leap into an $850 ALO K701 before you figure out whether you like the fit and basic sound quality of the stock K701, since although they are better, they are not fundamentally different. Can't speak to the Grado, but I haven't been too impressed with the comfort level of previous Gradio designs. Bottom line: buy stock first (used if you can get 'em), then upgrade if the mood strikes.

Short answer : If these are meant to be used at home only - GS-1000.

I am not one who doubts the sonic benefits of aftermarket cables; I have a number myself and have found significant improvement with each. However, I would strongly recommend that you upgrade your amp and source before looking at aftermarket cables.

I had a nice setup with krell amp, mit shotgun s1 cables with set of martin logans ( before my kids destroyed it) and I know what good sound is, and how much it improved when I have purchased mit cables, it became much more musical with a lot of air and huge sound stage.
The thing is, that is cost much more to go upgrade way, but it is true if you do not like the sound, than no upgrades will change that.
I just wanted some kind of portable setup , with the benefit of bigger system.
But this is exactly, what I needed to hear, that stock sound was not that much different from upgraded items.
I was just under impression that iqube will be able to drive k701 or hd650 with getting a close sound, of the better system. In the end, I decided to go with triple.fi and I will try to find the way to audition other phones.

WOW, thats a real stretch, to be cosidering the GS-1000 one moment and then to opt for IEMs. Perhaps you should have mentioned "portable use" as referring to carry around with you. The GS1k ,701, or 650 wouldnt have been a good choice at all for this situation.

yeah, I mostly moving it around the house, sometimes outside while I relax in the backyard, I read few reviews where people actually preferred triple.fi over k701 sonically , so I figure I give it a try
