Pink Floyd - Page 4

post #46 of 62
I confess - I have a thing for the early Pink Floyd. While the Piper at the Gates of Dawn is not as good as A Saucerful of Secrets, both are very good albums. Saucer's title track is just pure awesomeness.

Ummagumma .. it features a good four live songs. Careful With That Axe, Eugene is just the best thing ever done, with that creepy scream!Even the soundtrack of More has good tracks.

Atom Heart Mother must be the most underrated song (and album) by PF. It has nothing wrong, it is never boring you. It has things right and the very warm sound with the choir .. ahh, bliss. So melancholic while superiorily well built. I'm afraid the rest of that album is not of the same quality.

And I think I don't have to plead for Meddle or DSOTM. Of the three long PF compositions, I think I slightly prefer Echoes to Atom Heart Mother and Shine On You Crazy Diamond comes third. The Wall is not on the other hand that good. The climax of the band was at DSOTM or WYWH, depending on tastes. I think nothing newer comes ever near as DSOTM.

I just watched Live at Pompeii and The Wall Movie the other night.
I realized I may not be bothered with the newer albums at all. They just don't sound anything I love about Pink Floyd.

I rank the top three as follows:

1. Meddle
2. Dark Side of the Moon
3. Atom Heart Mother / Saucerful of Secrets

Yeah, I had to share the third place. As for songs.. I have certain favourites from each album so I chose one of the best from each early/mid album. It makes a superb collection

* Astronomy Domine
* A Saucerful Of Secrets
* Careful With That Axe, Eugene
* Cymbaline
* Atom Heart Mother (Suite)
* Echoes
* (Time + Great Gig in the Sky)
* Shine On You Crazy Diamond
* Comfortably Numb

I just wrote some skit about these albums last week in other language so I had some text to translate here.

I really can't say how I got into Pink Floyd. I'm young and PF was not anything before I got myself into it. The random radio play at Another Brick in the Wall probably got my attention. I asked around about the artist and got the Wall. Then I have no memories of diving deeper. All I know is the result: absolutely keen on.

1. The Dark Side of the Moon

2. The Wall

3. Wish You Were Here

Also, definitely check out the concert video Pulse (not the live album version) in DVD. David Gilmour's guitar solo of Comfortably Numb is out of this world.

I don't think you need to listen to Pink Floyd's albums in any order, it's nice to mix it up a bit.  But if you want an order I'd say that you should probably start with some of their more successful albums ie.DSOTM, Division Bell or Wish you were here <- (My favourite) and then start to explore the more experimental ones later such as Piper at the gates of dawn.      But although you don't need an order of albums to appriciate Pink Floyd, don't go for any of the 'Greatest hits' albums. Each album represents a period in their development, and you don't want a random bunch of tracks bundled together.

I just listened to Piper At the Gates of Dawn on Mono CD and Stereo Vinyl. I found the Stereo to be clearer but found the extreme separation was noticeably annoying. The Mono was muffled but was more focused had much better bass. By default, the Mono wins.

WYWH SACD as of late in 5.1. I know, I know- nothing to do with headphones.

Wish You Were Here - Experience Edition comes with a second disc of unreleased tracks. 'You've Got To Be Crazy (Live at Wembley 1974)' is an amazing track! It is essentially the song 'Dogs' off Animals but with more bite and rawness (probably due to its live nature). A must listen for anyone who likes the Animals Album.

Actually, Obscured By Clouds was the album right before DSOTM.

Can't really go wrong with 70s era Floyd from Meddle through The Wall:

Meddle

Obscured By Clouds

Dark Side of the Moon

Wish You Were Here

Animals

The Wall

Have you heard the Wall Live 1980-1981?  Fantastic recording.

Which remaster do you think is the best of The Wall? I currently have the MFSL and C2K. MFSL sounds warmer and not nearly as "bright" as the c2k.

I got the DSOTM Immersion box and 3 of the discs had come loose and are scratched.  The packaging is horrible for something this expensive.

I was thinking about getting that set from Amazon but the discs coming loose and getting damage is giving me pause.

Fortunately, they still play and the CDs ripped properly.  Also the Bluray discs weren't scratched, which is good since I don't have a player to test them on.

Dark Side of The Moon is a great place to start.
Depending on your music tastes it's wise to start eighter from the last album or from the first.
If you liked DSOTM chances a that you will also like the later albums, if you're interested in the more progressive genre then start from the first album.
I can imagine that ''London '66 '67'' can be a bit abstract for some. It reminds me of Metallic Spheres, but it's not the same.
There is a very distinct change the band makes over the years, yet never loses it's personality.
It's a very interesting band that I keep koming back to.
