Question about impedance adaptors - options?

EDIT: Got the adaptor. Thanks for the help!

Hi HF, semi-recent lurker, came out of hiding with a question!

I'm having trouble with buying a headphone impedance adaptor. A skim through Google proved a bit troublesome because there doesn't seem to be any standard set of keywords I should be searching for (impedance adaptor/impedance resistor/resistor adaptor/level attenuator/attenuator adapter/lol wut) but a thorough read through HF yielded better results. Even then I've only been able to make a mediocre list:

- Oehlbeck (Oehlbach?) 120Ω? (from Dr. Meier? Can't find it on his site but I might give him an email)
- APureSound 75/120Ω (pricey!)
- Etymotic ER4P-2P (so pricey, and only 75Ω)
- Shure EA650 (PA235) Attenuator 0~555Ω? (also volume control? Conflicting reports about effect on SQ, but so cheap)
- This guy on eBay sells a cheap one with questionable build quality... (eBay My World - awwan)
- TURBO just came out with a new version of his limiter? 75-300Ω. Might email him too for price

EDIT: Also ran into DW04 75Ω on Head-Direct...

I've never done any DIY electronics before but although I'm confident I could pull off making this myself I don't even have any basic soldering tools and somewhat limited access to parts.

I've been buying bits and pieces to make up a portable rig over the last months or so (mostly lurking around HF for reviews and what not). Stressing over a small part of my rig like an adapter is probably a bit silly to you guys but please bear with me since I'm so new to this 'hobby' (consequently I have no idea if choosing a different adapter over another is even a big deal SQ-wise).

Recommendations on which I should choose would be great! Or even if you can add some more to the list. Basically I want something like 120/150Ω. Unless you guys think I could get away with being adventurous and use an even higher one? It's going to go between a Corda 2Move and Shure E4's.

Again, thanks very much for your time/help. Looking forward to chatting. And wasting more money. But mostly chatting I think.

Quick bump before school.

I was in the same boat as you awhile ago, as I was trying to tame the highs on a pair of Beyer DT-831s and smooth out the response overall. Your first option is what I did........I contacted Jan Meier and got the Oehlbach 120 ohm adapter. I can't remember the exact price, but I think I paid around $20.
Good luck.
And BTW.................welcome to Head-Fi.

You should check out [AK]Zip's adaptors at A Pure Sound:

Alex is a great guy to deal with and Im sure he could set you up with whatever you wanted.

Thanks, I think I will drop him an email. Does he make them himself? The price sounds pretty right. I hope the shipping is fast. Waiting sucks. Waiting for all kinds of orders at the moment, lol.

Those look pretty but they're a bit pricey. Almost the price of a P to S cable. But I'm gonna skim through his store and see if he has any other goodies. What are your thoughts on his stuff?

Thanks tons for the replies.

Also, noticed thread got moved. Sorry for posting in the wrong forum. Wasn't too sure where it'd go under. Thanks!

The guy from eBay you mentioned, he made excellent-built adapter.

Had a chat with Dr. Meier and it's $20. Guess I'll go and make an order soon.

I noticed in your sig you're using an adapter. Is it one of his?

So my adaptor arrived and I've been listening through it for a bit, I didn't really know what kinds of changes I should expect. I wanted one basically because I gathered that it makes *some* low impedance headphones sound 'better'.

Again, I have a pair of E4/SCL4s. I hope I'm describing this right, I'm not too familiar with the terms yet... it sounds 'brighter' (sparklier?), like the music was moved up the spectrum. I thought the bass was lighter than without the adaptor but it's now probably what most people would call 'tight'. I guess I like the changes. Gotta turn the volume knob up quite high on the amp though. At least now I'm in no in danger of blowing my ears out.

There's not really any general opinion about what adding impedance does is there? From what I can read most people say any combination of these: reduces hiss, reduces bass roll-off (not even sure what this is yet), 'improves' bass, brings out detail, etc. And I'm aware that it won't work for all kinds of headphones (like some multiple driver IEMs). Just curious what your thoughts are.

I'm very curious now!!

I used to have ER*4-S IEMs with the Cosmic Traveler Amp from Headroom, and yes there were a lot of black as pitch silence tone values, lots of intrinsic details in the bass, but an overall lack of bass quantiy and presence, hence my request to have them recabled to ER*4-P

Now that I have my COWON O2PMP, and a couple of FiiO (oh my ex-friend THREW my Cosmic out the door at me because he was "sleeping" and broke it. Broke It!!) anypoo, I have the E3 and E5 at the moment, and am curious about adding impedance to my rather large collection of IEMs...

What else can you say about the imedance adapter??

Question from someone who should know.

I fly Boeing 757/767 and am thinking of purchasing a Bose Headset X. Bose tell me it will not work if I simply use an adaptor to connect to the in-flight entertainment system (when on rest) as the impedence is incorrect.

Headset impedence is:
Monaural mode: 160 ohms (ON) and 230
ohms (OFF) at 1 kHz
Stereo mode: 320 ohms (ON), 460 ohms (OFF).

The entertainment system is similar to that of a portable audio piece of equipment.

Thank you in advance.

is there any impedance adaptor with good quality and better $$ out there?!
