By request, a new section has been added: [Eartips: Factors for comfort]

I am happy that this guide helped some of you

This really should be one of the sticky threads. So many IEM questions are asked and this would answer them.

This really is great. x3

A few information updated.

If a mod see this, can you move this thread to the earphones forum? Thanks.

If there's one thing I'd like to add:

This is an earbud

THIS IS NOT AN EARBUD

THESE ARE NOT EARBUDS

thank you for understanding. This has been another lesson from John.

Thanks, this information is not only helpful to newbies but also lazy people like me.

I like the earbud vs. canalphone post. That should be moved or copied to the beginning of the thread. Many people(especially new members) get that mixed up.

Great guide! Thanks a lot! So I will think about upgrade my UE SF.3, because of normal isolation. A great isolation IEM is much better for my since I need to take metro every working day.

Updated information with pretty PICTURES!!!
Nice pictures!! There shouldn't be any confusion with clear pictures of the different types.

I still think this one should be a sticky.

EDIT: Interestingly enough I've noticed that several consumer electronics stores list ALL these headphones as IN EAR headphones without differentiating between "earbud" and "IEM/canalphone". Seems like that add to the confusion.

That'll be difficult.

Although some brand carry a house-sound, some don't. Ety, for example, is alway very analytical, flat, detail, and cold sounding. On the other hand, UE doesn't have a very distinct sound signature on its IEMs.
