i've read some posts about high-speed soft-recovery super-duper diodes and while i am still "studying" the subject i also want to know if this amp (P.M. Hybrid) -> http://www.pmillett.addr.com/images/hybrid_head_sch.PDF would benefit from using such components...fast diodes are pretty expensive but this amp has very few (i think i would replace d3 d4 only) so i want to get "the diodes" just in case they actually do make a difference...

There was a long discussion about this over at diyaudio.com (in the solid state forum) a while a go. Didn't really read much of it, but you might find it interesting. I seem to recall that the MUR820/MUR860 were mentioned as being among the best. They are not that expensive IIRC, so you could give it a shot.

diodes in those positions shouldn't colour the sound at all. That said, it is worth getting better diodes than just bog standard 1N4xxxx's. The ultrafast recovery diodes are mainly used in power supply rectifiers to keep the input AC as smooth as possible...

CRDs and FREDs aren't at all the same sort of beast. CRDs are JFETs configured as current sources.

Of course not. That's like asking if you can replace op-amp X with buffer Y.
