iPod classic vs. iriver clix2; ipod is a though guy! - Page 2

I like my sound neutral yet full, immersive, engaging, wide and detailled. The ipod can deliver just that in a very decent way (the 6G ipods). The clix2 seems to have a very good codec, but somehow it doesn't show in its sound signature. When I turn of SRS and set the Costum EQ flat then it sounds lifeless and narrow to me. If I set SRS to it's standard settings I get a reasonable sound that I can only describe best as ''fairly neutral regarding soundstage, fullness and lifelike''. If I tweak the SRS too much I get an overprocessed sound.

I do like neutrality and fidelity, but I'm not a guy who thinks sound effects and tweaks (both hard and software) are totally useless. If they are well implemented they can do great jobs!

Further I would like to state that I know enough about electronics to know how the clix2 works and fucntions. I've had many many DAPs in my hands and haven't had any troubles with all those DAPs.

Ok. Why would you want to tweak SRS, and not the Custom EQ? Have you tried tweaking the Custom EQ?

I don't know if all EQ's are equal, but the Clix has an unusual EQ. In the past I wouldn't even have touched any EQ being a purist; my home Hifi hasn't seen EQ for the past 20+ years.

There seems to be a "sweet spot" depending on the phones you're using. My Livewires respond really well to the Clix2's EQ. If you want a neutral but engaging sound, then you need to tweak the EQ. You have to balance this with the correct volume setting.

My apologies,

You sounded either like a noob, or a troll, and I couldn't decide which one.

well,

I tweaked the EQ. I tried many different settings. But somehow I have the feeling that the EQ isn't responding very well or that my Atrio's don't respond well to the clix EQ. They respond well to the Sony EQ.

I'm gonna have a good listen to the clix this afternoon and compare it to the ipod and MZ-RH1 onze again. See if my opinion differs.

But I just can't get ino the clix sound. The clix2 is a high praised player here on head-fi, just like the Cowon's. But the Cowon's didn't sound right to me either.

Maybe I'll get some decent sound of it this afternoon. I'll keep you updated. What is the sound signature of those LiveWires?
The atrio's are a bit focused on the low end.

Apologies accepted! I'm certainly no noob. Let's say I just have an odd way of describing my findings.

Balanced and neutral.

well the atrio are excellent phones for portables as they have excellent extension even at low volumes for bass. they are very balanced phones without the usual boost to mids or highs that manufacturers often use to make them more exciting. they are quite similar to many reliable monitoring phones.

natural in hifi phones generally tends to be mid oriented with tweaked highs.

loads of bass is often a very natural phenomenon with music and has been that way for a long time - so phoens that reproduce this naturally are natural. phoens that stuff this are well... stuffing it.
