Where do people buy gold wire for audio cables?

I have seen gold plated OFC copper. How does this compare to gold plated silver?

thanks

Gold prices are at an all time high now. I would wait a bit if I were you

Connecting a Vampire XLR on my headphones (the vampire XLR pins are directly plated gold over copper alloy), the sound to me is very rich and dark but lacks the portrail of high frequencies presented with silver plated copper (Xhadow XLR). I've not yet heard gold plated silver.

The only gold cable I know of is the Van Den Hul MC Gold with gold coated silver coated copper. It's expensive though, not not as expensive as their silver only cable. Not much interest in it though, as The First Ultimate (carbon) and Thunderline (copper) are cheaper and sound excellent.

Someone here mentioned Aural Thrills Audio for gold wire a while back.

I managed to pick up some solid gold plated copper wire from Navships on ebay. Also Mundorf have their silver/gold wire. Parts Connexion sells that.

Heh, an MOT asking for help sourcing parts and supplies. Somewhere rickcr42 is ranting and raving.

lol. Nah, won't be selling these. I just want to try a few feet to see why people charge so much for them. ARE THEY THAT GOOD?

Try a jeweler's shop. Many of them have gold wire, or can get it, without the audiophile markup. Applying your own heatshrink is simple.

Be sure to take a look at commodity prices first, however. Metals have been hitting record highs lately.

From an electrical perspective the conductivity of gold and copper are not sufficiently different to make the investment in gold worth-while for audio frequency wire, either internal or interconnection. The only place where it might perceivably make a difference is in the ultra-fine windings of a moving coil cartridge. The same goes for silver.

However gold plating is used on connector terminals for the pragmatic reason that it does not oxidize and hence, if the plating is sufficiently deep, the connection will maintain long term integrity.

Where you see gold and silver used for wire you can be sure that the real reason is that the unscrupulous marketing turkeys are trying to sell expensive products to those people who are easily deluded.

Save your money : )

Did you try the Mundorf?
There's a store in my town that sells Mundorf solid siver with 1% gold @ 0.5mm diameter. Just curios how do they sound?

Not yet. I know another person on the forum has tried it and commented on how they sound. Here is a link to those post http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f6/diy...ml#post3114417 http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f6/diy...ml#post3116312

I will probably get some the next time I get an itch to build some cables.
