Damnation is here! (new opeth album!) - Page 3

Just listened to my copy for the first time and WOW. It is nostalgic and reminiscent of the early King Crimson stuff, but like I've said before, I'm kind of an old fart, and I dig it big time.

The songs are ultra melodic- Mikael Akerfeldt's/ Peter Lindgren's guitar work is amazing. I love the atmosphere created by the retro Mellotron and clean vocals.

What a disc...

my initial impressions:

It's not as adventurous as I thought it might be. It's kind of, I dunno, ordinary. Very pretty sounds though, I just think the arrangements are a little bit tame, esp. compared to their full-on death metal stuff.. I mean, I was expecting it to be calm and ambient, but I just, I dunno.. it feels like I'm listening to some prog band from the 70's. But maybe that's what they were going for. Then Steve Wilson does his "vocals through a telephone" thing and I think I'm listening to Porcupine Tree. It's not that different. I guess I was expecting something a little more ******** up. I like it ok, it just isn't as dark or epic or emotional as I thought it might be. I comes off as kind of cold and light. But that's just one listen..

Could it mean Damnation has "Commercial" potential? If so; I would say it's a very good thing. People need to hear better quality Music, especially Music with Creativity, and Musicians playing real instruments.

I got a hold of the album a few months ago. Its a good album but I prefer the mix of heavy/acoustic stuff more.

I saw them live on the 29th, it kicked ass! they didnt play any new songs though as they are waiting to do that on their next tour
