i live in the ft lauderdale area so this is basically an awesome opportunity to come to a meet and try out all these headphones that i wouldnt be able to otherwise and of course meet all you fine people.

BUT, ive only been an audiophile for a few months, even now i might be a faker and a poser audiophile, but i promise i really like good toones

i know its a stupid thing to say but might i say im a little afraid or intimidated to go. i know all you guru's are going to be there and while that doesnt scare me (well it does) but its mostly me not knowing what to do once i get there. i want to go really bad just so i can test out some phones (mostly going just to hear a pair of balanced 650s out of a good amp and a good source so if you see a guy whacking it in the middle of the room with a pair of 650s on his head, be sure to say hi ). if anyone has any advice or perhaps some stories or accounts of their first meet (what they did, how it felt - things like that) please post them here. they will go a long way to making me feel comfortable.

thanks

also, what is polite etiquette for such meets? do you stand/sit with a headphone for as long as the cd takes? just one song? 3 songs? do you just go upto someone and ask if you could try out their headphones? is it polite to bring your own cd's? or an mp3 player if you want to listen how well/poor they perform without an amp? i just dont want to do something dumb if i end up going =/

oh and i just read about a vendor list. i need headphones right now but am debating waiting until canjam. are the headphones there cheaper just because of the meet? or can you cajole them into giving you a discount because you are a headfi member?

There is no reason to be intimidated. There will be many in attendance that are new to a Head-Fi meet. This is certainly on a larger scale but in the end is a gathering of people with a similar interest in headphones, music and meeting new people. You will have a great time and there is nothing you need to know to attend other than to be careful with other peoples gear. If you follow that rule, you will be fine.

gee thanks a lot. watch me be the clutz who gets tangled in a web of wires and kills the power to the whole thing >< i have exams starting the monday after canjam but its all papers and hopefully ill be done with all of them and will be able to attend. man im all excited now!

oh and one other "suggestion." not sure if you guys do this already but it would be extremely helpful to new people like myself if the members put some kinda placard or a note saying what headphones/other hardware they have in front of them. it would help out people who dont know all the headphones just by pictures already and just plain dont know what a certain piece of equipment might be. the higher echelon of members probably wont need this but anything to help us lowly noobs will go a long way

crappyjones123, here are some basic truths that should help:

1. head-fiers are the simply the friendliest, most open, generous, enthusiastic, and kind folks around. You will be completely welcome.

2. Florida head-fiers are nuts. How can you be intimidated by a group of nuts? You and your friends will be making fun of us within a couple hours.

3. The gear will be pretty self-explanatory, but if you have a question, you'll be able to get knowledgeable answers from the people that actually own the gear, or better yet, from the people who make it. You don't get that chance too often.

4. Everyone comes to meets for the same reason, whether you're a near expert or have never heard anything other than stock earbuds. We all want to hear gear we've never heard, hear gear we can't afford, hear gear we're thinking of getting, hear our own gear and fall in love with it again, AND, most importantly, hang out with friends, new and old, and have a great time.

5. As a former English teacher (scary, I know, considering the huge number of mistakes I make typing quickly on this forum), you can bring any paper you're stuck on, and I can help tidy it (that's a serious offer).

6. If anyone is going to trip over anything and shut the whole thing down, it will probably be me. You'll just be able to point and laugh.

Come join us. You won't regret it.

Three things.
1. Be careful with other peoples gear. Lots of it can not be replaced or will cost a fortune to do so. (same thing?)
2. Have a clean head.(At least the outside).
3. If you live close, or can afford to make this trip (or any large meet) you will probably not be able to find as many nice setups, nice people, and dealers to take advantage of in one place for at least another year. Go for it.

I'll add the following, though hopefully I really didn't have too.

4. Shower before coming. In other words, make sure that your entire body is clean.

5. Be sure that your outer ears are clean. Use a wash cloth or Q-tips or something to ensure that.

6. Brush your teeth and maybe use mouthwash. Quarters often are close.

In other words, be ready to have a nice, social experience.

i live maybe 30 minutes, 40 tops from the embassy suites. its just a guess since i live 20 minutes from the fll airport. so worst case scenario its on the other end of town from me. 90% certain i shall be there.

i hear you can a nice little pair of r10s boom. *starts to craft out a fiendishly clever plan to steal the r10s without boom knowing :evil laugh:* i woulda brought my 650s and my little dot mk v if i still had them so that i wouldnt feel as bad but now i just have my amp left =/

which brings me back to one of my original question. do the vendors there offer the headphones for slightly cheaper than usual because its such a big meet or is it the same price as always? i need a new pair of headphones and im debating either spending some money now or saving up for the next month and a half and that get something real nice (perhaps another 650? maybe a BALANCED 650 *drools*)

a random thought just entered my mind. i know this isnt the sale/trade forums but im not trying to sell the amp here. so please dont ban me because of a misunderstanding. could i possibly bring the amp to can jam in case anyone is interested? i dont know if such things have been done in the past but it spares the buyer the shipping costs and the seller the paypal fees. considering im not an authorised seller im not sure if ill be allowed to do so but i just wanted to know if it was something i could do, not just for my own benefit but for that of anyone who might be interested in getting the amp.
