would the pocketdock (senstation) be sufficient? Would there be much difference from like a $100 direct LOD?

I found a difference, and the ALO JUmbo Cryo Silver X crushed all the other LOD. I have two Sendstation pocket docks (the small and large with video) and I don't use them much anymore. I use an S2 silver plated copper LD (PM Warrier05) and a "barqy" (pm barqy) made Silver in cotton insulation LOD that are very decent, and still beat the sendstation.

I finally gave in and bought the Touch yesterday. In a word, the line out is superb! It sounds every bit as good as my 5G iPod, if not better.

I agree with HeadphoneAddict on the LOD. My CryoDock sounds better than the SiK din that I keep around for a backup.

I meant that in the context of "iPod touch versus diyMod 4G with Black Gates." Compared to the 5G/5.5G stock or modded, I have no idea.

The iTouch sounds great from line-out, indeed it is a night and day difference from the hp-out which sounds mediocre. Interestingly it also blows away the 2Move's DAC (or my MacBook's sound card but that is no surprise). My only complaint is the capacity which is why I will soon switch to a Classic I think...
