iPod Touch sound quality via line out

I have read a number of threads on the Touch, and there are opinions across the board about the sq. I would like to know how the Touch sound quality compares to other iPods (classic, 5G, 5.5G) using the line out to an amp.

Well I've heard that it's the same as the other ipods of this generation, but I can't verify it yet. I just ordered a pocketdock, but it won't be here until next week.

I originally was unimpressed with the sq of the touch. I moved to the Touch from a Karma, and the Touch definitely falls short. However it does have a cool interface

Once I'm amping via line out thought I expect things to improve greatly.

The 5G/5.5G supposedly use different DACs.

I think it sounds better than the 5/5.5G iPods.

I've been using mine instead of my iMod for the last 2 weeks & havn't missed it that much...

great line out - killer bass performance without the amp but with the amp and line out, i die every time

The line out is just awesome, definately better than the 6G Classic (I tried it). I had a 5G before and it was better than that. The line out is one of the best that apple has created ( sans the 1G mini).

Thanks for the feedback. It's good to hear all these comments, now I definitely want one. I am hoping for a $100 price drop on the 32gb in the near future.

I use mine more than any other DAP simply because it does a lot more and I find I need to keep it on me for its other utilities. I think it sounds great w/ HP out to Etys. I have been saying that for awhile and I continue to think it. Once they drop that new SW package it will be a great piece of gear. I have already started putting $ aside for the 32 GB.

The line out is amazing, very powerful and clean it seems better than nano 2g 3g and 5.5.

well the touch has a meatier sound than the nano for instance. i have both and actually prefer for portable listening the nano but when i am really just wanting to enjoy a bit more of a punchy sound, the touch comes out. the nano performs better with soundstage however, even when driving low imp phones with about -60- - 70 per formance whereas the touch performs in the high 50-60 range, both quite exceptable.

Nope, all three use the WM8758 (or WM8978 which is basically the same chip).

They should sound the same, unless of course Apple changed the caps/inductors in the signal path, which might have happened, but I really doubt it.

Remember when the Cardas V2 (gray) cable came out for Sennheiser headphones and everybody was like "ooh, wow, this sounds so much better than V1 (blue), more mids, better highs, etc etc" and then Colleen Cardas had a laughing fit during an interview and said it's the exactly same cable but with a different color jacket.

I think this is the same situation, same DAC in all three.

I don't like to use amp for portable use, it defeats the purpose of portable IMHO. So, how is itouch sq unamp from headphone out. I'll be using akg k81dj and I've been using Vaio pocket and Zune 30gb.

In a word, "Average".

I reviewed the sound quality a while ago when in a previous thread. Here's the link to it:
