ESS MK1 Heil Air Motion Transfer Headphones

Thread Starter
I've spotted a couple of pairs of these things on Ebay lately. I had never seen or heard of them before and was surprised to see them fetching over $200.

I've searched head-fi and Googled them but can't find much on them.

Does anyone know anything about them?
Are they any good? Worth $200?

What kind of phones are they?

I watched the last auction go way more than I was prepared to pay.
They are of an unknown quantity but it looks like the design of them wouldn't be getting the most from the drivers. I'm tempted by the second pair....

These represent a classic moment in headphone design, and like all ESS equipment of that time, they fetch a massive premium. If, however, what you want is a fine-sounding pair of AMT headphones, I'd suggest an Ergo or a TakeT.

Check out my "review" http://www.head-fi.org/products/ess-mark-1-stereophones/reviews/9741, although I may not know what I am talking about, as I don't have any other headphones to compare them to, and I haven't listened to the Precide Ergo's in about 9-10 years, so I really can't compare. Maybe someday I'll borrow the Ergo's from my in-laws and do an AMT comparison.
