Just buy vintage. Most of my headphones have cost under $75 and sound very good. Prices of good vintage gear has been going up lately, but can still be had cheep. I recently won an auction for a pair of Marantz stats that are supposed to be the equivalent of the Stax SR-5. $15 shipped.
