I went to school in Eau Claire, where he's from, and know several people who know him. I saw him with his band Deyarmond Edison a few times.

I thought he, and the band were pretty decent for a local group. But I never imagined he'd put out an album getting the kind of recognition this one is getting. I'll have to check it out.

I just discovered Bon Iver.

Can anyone suggest something along the same lines....unfortunately, he only put out one album like this.

Thanks.

what really impresses me about justin vernon is how outstanding he sounds live. he and jim james provide some of the best (falsetto) vocals.

i'd pay a pretty piece to listen to vernon and james with a neko case sorbet in between.

Some good suggestions. Might wanna check out some much earlier music too, something like Simon and Garfunkel's great Bookends, or maybe Nick Drake's Pink Moon. There was another thread I did about a guy that goes by the band name of The Hotel Alexis, and it had some other suggestions along the lines of Bon Iver, who does have a bit of that Sparklehorse magic in both his music and his fractured tales. The new Sun Kil Moon "April" (along with "Ghosts" from a few years ago) is also very good. Do you like Cat Power's "Moon Pix" and "You Are Free"?

Made even more so by Steve Albini's great recording, and always mastered beautifully too.

Although mastered way too hot, I'd also highly recommend Josh Ritter's mostly acoustic "Animal Years" from 2006. Like Iron and Wine (also mastered too hot), Califone, Holopaw, Ugly Casanova, and many others, recorded by Brian Deck. And it does lead off with a good ant-war song too. Back before the big presidential race got heated up here in the US, before so much national attention was focused squarely back on the war, "Girl in the War" was a refreshing statement, understated while still expressing anger, a poetic illustration of how our partisan political leaders will spend endless hours and days and years arguing whose fault it is, or whose historical account of the war is more accurate, instead of coming together to find a way out, to stop the senseless loss of life. Full of religious metaphors and moral indignation .... good stuff

Paul said to Peter you got to rock yourself a little harder
Pretend the dove from above is a dragon and your feet are on fire
But I got a girl in the war, Paul, her eyes are like champagne
They sparkle, bubble over, and in the morning all you got is rain

BTW, if you like Josh and that song, there's also the somewhat complementary tale "Peter Killed the Dragon" that was on the "Girl in the War" EP, and it's widely available online, including a cool live record store version at youtube, though if you get a chance the live version on the Good Man EP is the best I've heard. Guitar work is much fuller, vocal is perfect, sounds great. Don't think the plastic EP is available for sale, but you can download all or part.
