Etymotic Er6i advice

Hey folks, after some time, I've decided that I'd like to get ahold of some of these headphones. However, I'd like a bit of advice, I've spotted a pair on sale that are labelled up as Er6is, are white, but have a right-angled plug (on a white cable).

As far as I was aware, only the black versions of these headphones came with a right-angled plug.

I've been told these were sent out as a replacement product from the manufacturer.

Before parting with my cash, I would much appreciate it if someone could give me their opinion on this. Do Etymotic now produce white er6is with a right-angled plug? Could these possibly be fake?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

According to the specs on the Etymotic Research website, only the black ER-6i's come with a right angle plug. Email their tech support people with this question. Let us know what they say.

I've emailed the etymotic's support chaps, so fingers crossed I'll get some sort of reply.

I've decided to spend a lil more though and go for a set of black ER-6is from another supplier for better peace of mind.

The original seller just told me not to buy if I was uncertain....lol, I can tell you that obliterated any faith I might have been inclined to have in them!

I'll make sure to post here if I hear any more from Etymotic just in case anyone else stumbles across a similar set of headphones.

Hope I like the headhpones after all of this! Quite a hassle getting the things over in the UK for less than £60 ($120). Most I've ever spent on a set has been about £15 ($30) on my px100s, but finding that there are times when I wish I had a bit more isolation from the world around and also be nice to have something small and discrete - even the px100s are a bit bulky at times.

You will love them ... but don't judge them until you learn how to really get them into your ears .... they go deep .. a bit funny feeling at first ... once they are in and sealed, you will have plenty of bass.

It took me a month to realize I was not getting them all the way in my ear canal.

Thanks for the advice! But which tips do you use? And how do I know if they're deep enough? Do I just need to go with the largest size that fits completely in the canal?

I like the compressable foam tips. For me, the flange tips were uncomfortable and didn't seal as well.

I also bought some Shure black foam replacement tips since they're considerably cheaper vs the Etymotic version and more sturdily made. The Etymotic foams tend to detach from the plastic tube that attaches to the earphone after a while.

The downside is that the Shure foam tips will sometimes take the filter off the earphone and you have to wiggle it out and re-attach it.

Basically, what I'm saying is, think about maybe buying some Livewires okay?

You are looking for a good seal. When you have the seal right, the outside world fades out. I did not like the rubber/silicone flanged tips, but absolutely swear by the yellowish foam rubber tips. Roll them between your fingers, insert and let the foam expand to fill your ear canal. Sounds funky, but it works quite well. You will quickly get the hang of it.

And I swear by the 3 flange silicone tips. I bit of moisture .... pull up on my ear and slip them in.... silence....

Try all the tips and see what works best ... every ear is different.

Of course .... my ER6i's seem to not be in my bag and I am fearing the worst. I have had them for a couple years and I may have lost them. If so ... I will get the same thing .. I love them.

Really, just go as deep as you comfortablely can. The skin near the eardrum is super-sensitive, so you'll know when you are getting too close.

Tri-flange user here.

Give yourself some time to get used to them ... and don't expect dance club bass. But with the right fit and tips you find comfortable, you'll hear things you hadn't heard before. Very good value IEMs, and a good gateway drug to the more expensive stuff.

Good point about the Shures taking the filter off, Fing. Dysphasi -- consider the Comply foamies -- the short ones work very well with my ER6i's. (And good call on the black ones, by the way.)

Ta for the pointers chaps! (You headfiers seem a helpful lot!)

Tempted by the shure foam tips (when you say the filter can come off with them, that's a reversible, non-damaging consequence? - don't want to cause any damage!).

Do have to keep a tight reign on that wallet of mine though, so hopefully I can find something out of the included tips that fits well. I'll post back here with any personal insights/probs when they arrive (hate waiting for deliveries )

AFter you buy them, you can drop an email to ER and they will send you sample tips.

Thanks for the pointer

Back to my first posting I've received word from etymotic customer services, I'll copy and paste here for clarity:
Quote:
We have redesigned the ER6i white with the angled plug. This angled plug has a stronger stain relief.
This angled plug will not work well with the iPhone. The straight plug is available, if you want to order this part you will need to specify this particular product.
All credit to etymotic for replying to me, but do think it would be a good idea to publicise product updates. think they meant 'strain' rather than 'stain relief' though! And I wonder why the angled plug wouldn't be so good with iphones...not that I've got one.

So there we go, I could have got them cheaper and sounds like they were indeed the real deal, not too fussed though, I'd rather pay a bit more for peace of mind and a more competent seller! (If someone asks about the authenticity of a genuine product, tell them it's blooming genuine, don't tell them not to buy if they aren't certain themselves!!!)

Well my etys have arrived Ordered on friday pm, delivered today (tuesday) from the US, not bad! Ended up costing about $85 new including postage, don't think that's so bad.

Anyhow, just wondering over a couple of things:

If I were to contact etymotic to ask for some sample tips, first off, which email address should I write to?

Secondly, which different etymotic tips are there? In the pack I got the standard grey triflanges (fitted already), the baby blue (I gather these are the same, but smaller) and the orange foam ones, is there anything in particular I should be asking for, or will a generic "could you possibly send me some sample eartips?" do?

Thanks in advance all!

You must have newer ones, they didn't start including the baby blues until recently. I have some Shure Black Foams for my Ety's and in my opinion, makes the Ety's the most comfortable thing I've tried. I did notice that the black foams took off my filter the first time. Ety says that the filters can't be replaced because to take them out (on purpose), you use the tool, which you puncture the filter with. When the filter comes out because of the foamie, you can just push it out of the foamie, and just pop it back in the Ety. Technically you don't need to filter the Ety's, it's just as open as Ultimate Ears' IEMs are. So unless you use wax or are that paranoid, you'll like the Shure Foams. The good thing is that they last long, so you don't have to take them off repeatedly. I just clean mine once a week with a cotton ball and alcohol.
