Inexpensive ($50-$150) Interconnects?

Hello,

I'd like any opinions on what you consider to be the best interconnects in the $50-$150 price range. I plan on auditioning several brands, but would like any help in narrowing the field. They will be connecting a CAL Gamma DAC (on the way out, so don't take it too seriously) to a Headroom Little.

Thanks.

There are a lot of interconnects in that price range. If you're willing to go the used cable route, then you may even find better values.

Cables I've tried in this $50 to $150 price range include:
  • DH Labs Silver Sonic BL-1 Series II
  • Monster Cable Interlink 400 MkII
  • Audioquest Coral
My favorite in that bunch was the Audioquest Coral. I believe they retail for around $130.

I think some nice guy is selling the Corals for $90 shipped in the For Sale forum... oh wait, that's me

Anyway, they're great cables, I've just upgraded to something a little more expensive... so let me know if you're interested.

Despite all my "Class A" equipment I'm still using Kimber PBJs in my rig. Until someone sends me something that will clearly sound better, I'm quite happy with them.

The MIT T2 which I have tried many times sound great and can be had for $80.

The MIT MI-330 Plus Series II Interconnect , which is two down from my high-end MITS, can be had for $150 :

I haven't heard this model, my cables are two models up from them, but if they are anything like them, then they are worth getting.

Also, check Ebay for some really killer deals on MIT cables. I got my MIT's which are worth about $700 for a mere $165 from Ebay. It's a great way to get the very high end stuff on the cheap if you know what to look for.

Good Luck!

I wouldn't mind hearing if anybody's got suggestions as to cables significantly better than a Belden 89259 DBSE design, for under $200, used or new...

I recommend the DH Labs Silver Sonics. They really bring through the lively, airy, and energetic qualities. And did I mention detailed? No mud or veils that I'm aware of. They're a great budget interconnect -- I use DH Labs myself (the Silver Pulse, which I am very much assuming retain the same signature sound).

Hi dhwilkin, in my review of the Bolder Cable Company's interconnects, I reviewed the Type I interconnect at the end. This cable is based on the 89259 design but with fancy (and good) termination and a pretty covering. While it sounded decent for the $65 sticker price, I thought that my Silver Sonic BL-1 ($100) was noticeably and significantly better. I will soon be receiving a 1-m pair of Silver Sonic Air Matrix interconnects (as soon as I buy that money order and send it ), so look for a review of that cable in comparison to the BL-1. The Bolder Type II is also significantly better than the Type I, so you should look into that as well.

I would recommend ZCable's Jazz4 in that price. I really like this cable for the price. I also have ZCable's LIVE which is over 3 times the price but the Jazz4 holds its own. For a Headphone set up, it is great.

I'm gonna recommend the Homegrown Audio Super Silver IIs, $50 for DIY, $80 for DBSE; they get great reviews. Macdef, a lot of people say that the SSIIs blow the PBJs away.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I'm not really considering the BL-1, because it supposedly loses something in the bass. I'll go take a look at the Air Matrix and the Homegrown Audio stuff. Haven't heard much about ZCable, guess I'll check that out as well.

I can also recommend the Jazz 4 interconnects. I'm going to do a review shortly. I've had these in my system for about the last 2 months and can say they are pretty good compared to the MIT 330 Series 1 I had in my system before.

Cool. Which 330's do you have, as you know there are a lot of different types.

A good place to look for cables, if you're willing to buy used, is www.usedcables.com You can generally get cables there for a hefty discount, and they have a good return policy if you don't like them.
