that is a good comparison i think - very good indeed. i can do a direct comparison of the two because i have owned the two. i have an sa6 (new model) review coming up and i think i may do a formal fx500 (did someone say that they are coming back to me) very evil

Atrio M5/8 Vs FX500?

I've almost pulled the trigger several times on these but at minimum, I need a serious Atrio M5/8 Vs FX500 comparison.
I know the IE8's are out for right now due to cost constraints.
(just purchased the P-Vcap Dock, (2)ALO SXC Cryo micro docks, and a ALO SXC Cryo micro mini to mini to go with my Red Wine Audio/ALO iMod and RSA P-51 Mustang amplifier and Little Dot MK1+
Oh yea, and I picked up one of those new Nuforce portable amps.
The M5/8 Vs FX500 is what I need to know. They are somewhat in the same price range, (the Atrio being a little more expensive) and both are no -brainers for great bass. Someone, Anyone? Well, not really. I mean the comparison needs to be done by someone who (preferably) owns both and can write a short but unbiased review.
Thanks heaps in advance.

present iems: Shure 310, Westone 3, Yuin PK3 and 1, Soundmagic PL-30
Also the Audio Technica ATH-ESW9 Sovereign Wooden Headphones plus a bunch of others like the mylarone bijou and Koss Portapro

the atrio to this day remains my favourite universal iem. its bass quality is without a doubt better than the fx500 - simply more resolved. however, it is also plagued by bad echo inside the chamber. high bass and mids can get out of hand - too energetic.

that is the only fault i see with the phone. its cable is better than the victor, its plug is better and it is better stress-relieved. its bass is simply phenomenal if not too big. the victor's bass is close, but does not move as much air. however, it has no echo problems at all - even with fast trance music which resolves the same problem in the IE8.

the victor has fewer technical problems, but it, when on, is not the analogue of the atrio - i think no iem can be unless futuresonics' own custom (which i have not heard).

It's about time Futuresonics comes out with a new model, don't you think? I'd love to see something with a little better shell design, and with a wide nozzle. Of course, a little evolution to their dynamic driver would always be welcome!

if they could fix the inside chamber to be as solid as that of the victor, i think it would destroy the competition all the way up to customs. but without a better sound chamber, it is hit hard by bouncy low mids and upper bass. but that driver is phenomenal - best i have heard ever.

Maybe it's time to email Futuresonics to ask. I'll do that... I've actually emailed a Daniel there several times in the past, and he loves to discuss audio stuff, and is always very prompt in returning emails.

Which would you keep

This question is specifically for shigzeo Headphoneus Supremus

also, for anyone else who feels qualified to answer.

Although I read your reply several times I'll just simplify by asking........

If you could only keep one headphone, which would it be, the Atrio M5/8 or the FX500?
I'm leaving the IE8 out due to it's cost.
I know I know, unfair question but to me a valid one.

I've only recently decided (on my own) without input from anywhere that I do not care for the armature designs. I am constantly reaching for my Pl-30's and haven't hardly touched my Westone 3's. Considering their price margin, you'd think it would be the opposite. I wrote something on this site in regards to the PL-30 heaping praise on them and I actually got an email from them asking me if I was interested in becoming a local/regional? distributor....lol
Now I see the NuForce NE-8 (which is almost identical to the PL-30) being somewhat of a giant killer. Oh well, I'm rambling.
Thanks to any and all who have input. I love this site.
PS Please just answer the question as asked. Please do not add "well, if the 2 iems were identically priced or if this or if that blah blah".... OK? LOL

There are Dynamic lovers. (IE8,Phonak,JVC/victor,Atrio,Turbins,etc) all with similar atributes and somewhat similar price ranges (IE8 excepted in US). and then there are those who like Balanced armature drivers ( UESF5Pro,Sleek SA6, Shure SE's, X10, etc) but it's like anything else with audio. you like it or you don't regardless of whether others like it or not. I think Dyanamics are more fun and thrilling. More punch and feel to them. whereas the B/A's are more reference style "Flat" studio signature. Like the difference between the Denon Line of "Happy" cans and the AKG "studio" signature full sized cans. One will make you feel better than the other. That's why I have several different cans around. for when my mood or that of the music changes.

I don't know if I'm qualified, but I can relate to your praise of the PL-30 and I have both the Atrios and the FX500. I'd chose the FX500 over the Atrios anyway, but IMO considering your love of the PL30 would tip the scales all the more in favour of the FX500.

well, that is a bad question. i like them both intensely. but i have asserted that the atrio remains my favourite (non-custom) to date. its only flaw is the upper bass/lower mid echo (that i will admit that only i have been troubled by). the victor does not have the same problem and presents tighter presentation in a few areas, but the atrio are still my favourites.

if it was only on sound, i would maybe give the victor the nod, maybe. but when considering the entire package, the atrio are the better iem. they have a properly long cable, better stress relief, less crystalising cable (not perfect, but decent), are easier to wear over the ear and can be used while exercising.

if you never leave your house and don't mind using the extension cable or the straight plug into the phones, the victor might be for you.

i don't want to tell you which is better because i don't know what you need. but for me, the atrio is the standard by which every other iem is compared for sound, construction, cable, comfort, bass extension, control - everything i compare to the atrio which as much as i loved it, did not fit my genre of music.

Shigzeo-
I'm happy that your thread is finally sprouting some legs, as more and more discover this gem.

Edit: I should have risked it and bought them from Bluetin ages ago... but it was such an unknown for so long. I'm just glad I have them currently.

funny, you are like a champion of the victor fx500 (that i started) while i am a somewhat belaboured champion of the atrio m5 (which you started!)

Hmmm, I'm a bit confused, just when I thought the harshness in the upper mids/low treble was smoothing out, I come back after another 15 hour burn in session and they sound worse than when I began the day. I have about 45 hours of burn in so far. Did others notice this phenomenon or is my hearing going?! I could have sworn that I read somewhere someone saying that these get more sibilant with burn in ... do they smooth out after further burn in? Perhaps they really need the recommended 200 hours?
