sonus faber guarneri memento

hi guys,

i have never admitted that i have owned these for some time. i didn't want everyone to think i was a snob. more importantly, i was originally very upset to own these. they sounded horrible.

after proper placement, acoustic treatment,mark levinson and hundreds of hours of break in.... i will declare these the best "bookshelf" speakers i have ever heard. the soundstage is out of this world. i can hear things i cannot on the watt/puppies or anything else for that matter. they are like an extension of my ears.

it is no wonder then that my all time best phones so far are the gs1000. the faber's are the loudspeaker counterpart of the flagship grados imo. they are ear tuned to my ears. i love them now.

i know that these are expensive so please understand that what i hear may very well not be what you do. ie, ymmv. i do say anyone intrested should not hesitate to home audition them however.

ok sir. i will ship them to you same day air if you pay the shipping lol.

lets see.... 350lbs packaged with stands from usa to norway same day air.

ahh shux, i think you should just buy the speakers

Cool, you lucky thing.Sonus Fabers make some beautiful speakers, ive only heard the auditor standmount and it was incredible, id love a pair but for now they are out of my budget.

A local audio emporium sells Sonus Faber and Marin Logan, which is a local company [Lawrence, Kansas - I've toured the factory]. The Sonus Fabers are incredible eye candy, but I would go for the 'stats in a heartbeat.

i am powering them with a mark levinson 383 integrated. circa 1996.

my brother has martin logan summits. i prefer the sonus fabers. my brother of course does not agree with me.

i didn't mention, i also have a rel sub going with these. after hours of careful setup the sub crosses over seamlessly. you cannot tell there is a sub at all.

I completely agree with your evaluation of the SF. However for about 40% of the price Harbeth M30 is about 94% there; and for about 60% of the price Dynaudio Confidence C1 is about 97% there, sans the difference in their respective presentations.

money no object and want the prettiest monitor money can buy...SF is the right choice.

I plan to get a pair Amati when I have a larger place, for now M30 will have to do.

Hey musicman,

Can you post specifics as to your speaker placement? My room is 11x17, and I'm pretty sure my Guarneris are not in an optimal position.

I also plan on getting a sub with my Guarneris -- which REL did you end up getting? Might as well partially copy your setup, ;-)

Lucky to getting a factory tour I would take a pair of SF over the Logans.Not a fan of electrostatic speakers I guess...

akwok, the r205 in cherry. matches the memento's nicely for looks.
sounds great too. you do not want a huge sub in a small room. you might even look at the rel q-sub. rel's are not like most subs, you don't need a big one.

as far as the placement the only thing i can really tell you is that the way you adjust the spikes makes a huge difference. you can push back on the stands for more or less toe in. 1 degree on either stand strangely makes a huge difference. other than that you have different furniture etc. than me so you couldn't copy my setup i'd figure. i will tell you it will take hours to get them sounding right. i wouldn't even bother adjusting them untill they have 500 hours playing time on them though. by 1000 hours they go from sounding like $1,000 speakers to what they really are. fantastic.

Great set of speakers! I love mine and they keep impressing me with their ability to COMPLETELY disappear, leaving only the soundfield. Amazing.

I am experimenting with some different amps. I currently use Parasound JC-1 monoblocks which are nice, warm, and very powerful (and hot when running high bias!). My dealer lent me a pair of NuForce Reference 9 V2 SE monoblocks. The sound is a little leaner and slightly brighter than the Parasounds but the amount of detail and especially the imaging/soundstaging are fabulous. Vocals are "right there" and when you close your eyes the imaging of a person singing or playing an instrument is amazingly palpable. I am still trying to decide which amp is better with the speakers. So far it is a tough call.

great setup, and props for having the patience to tune it where you'd like it to be, but the speakers themselves just aren't for me, I don't understand the whole "bookshelf thing" I guess
