Which Laptop

I need to upgrade my laptop very soon. It's a Sony and I was thinking of going the same route again, but I am not brand loyal to the cause.
I am looking Inter dual core, 15" wide screen, QUIET fan, light weight. The quiet bit is important. I got a 3GHz Compaq laptop that has 5 fans ( I kid you not) and makes more noise than... Because of the noise I haven't used it for months now, and eBay might get a visit soon with it.
I like something with style as well. But I just can't get any info on how quiet laptops are. Anyone who can advise me on which brands and models to look at?

What about a 15" Macbook Pro. That is unless you are opposed to going over to Apple.

Dell XPS M1530? I have a couple friends that own XPS laptops, and they've been quite satisfied with them. I like them too, but not really suited to gaming, which I'm pretty huge on.

x2 on the MacBook Pro.
Seems to fit all your requirements (silent, light weight, 15" wide screen, Intel Core 2 Duo).

I guess I shall have to check out a MAC as well then. I like my dual mouse button etc though. The optical out is however of great interest. I looked at the Sony VGN-FZ21 or something like that. Was on offer at my local Costco, but I waited a week too long to decide and it sold out. Supposed to be close to what I was looking for.
I used to have a Dell or two, but I couldn't get them to stay in one piece after the 1st year. So I got put off by their reliability.

Any more choices other than the MAC that have optical out?

Macs have a secondary click - put two fingers on the pad and either tap or click the button. It's in System Preferences - Keyboard & Mouse.

I use my laptop for just about everything except gaming.
To play games I got a dual processor tower system with dual channel graphics card, wired up to a 32" LCD screen. The beer cooler is next to my games chair, which is a contraption I picked up many years ago that has "motional feedback" in the cushions. Waste of money really, but my mates love the set up and we always fight over who gets the chair. But I digress.

My next laptop will be a Thinkpad. Great quality, and they never go out of style. Even the old ones with P2's are slick looking. Plus they use intel core 2 duos. I don't know how quiet they are, but that's very important to me as well.
My Satellite has 3 obnoxiously loud fans.

I'll have to also recommend a MacBook Pro, I have an 18 month old 17" gen 1 Core Duo and it is still the best computer I've ever used. Silent and fast, definitely consider the MBP.

I'd go with the MacBook Pro. I use a MacBook now and am seriously thinking about an upgrade. Only thing is that I might hold off for a quad core - I speculate they'll be here in 2009.

well I love my xps m1710, at 2.8ghz dual core its quiet but take it to 3 or 3.2 and the fans don't stop! But I use it for games so not your thing, but it is strong, and not too heavy, and the 17in 1920x1200 panel is amazing!
