Do you say David Bowie as in 'Joey' or as in 'BOW-ee'?

I'm curious about this since most of my friends pronounce 'Bowie' as 'Joey'. And yes, it is pronounced like that!

But I often hear DJ's (and others) calling him David Bowie as in BOW-ee - like 'COW'.

How can DJ's possibly not know how to pronounce his name??

I remember reading an interview with Bowie many moons ago, and he said he got quite frustrated with people who mispronounced his name all the time. He said it was easy to remember because it rhymed with Zowie (his son's name, pronounced Zoe.)

Anyway, it is definitely 100% Bowie/Joey. So does anyone here pronounce it the other way?

It must be us ignorant Brits then (myself excluded!)

My b/f calls him BOWeee, but maybe that's just to annoy me??

I'm from the US, and I've never heard it pronounced that way, either. The name BOW-ee just isn't that common.

Yes. As in 'Bow' (bow and arrow) and 'Ee'.

Considering he's a BRIT who's been in the charts on and off for about forty years - you'd think we'd all know how to pronounce his name by now. At least the DJs should know??

After watching Beowulf, I've begun pronouncing it Bay-o-weeee!

Avril Lavigne pronounced it that way a couple years ago at the grammys trying to sound cool and obviously failed miserably. She is the only person clueless enough to pronounce it that way. Sorry about your boyfriend.

Its Bowie like the bowie knife, after the frontiersman who used the knife. David Bowie didnt like his real name and wanted to choose a stage name that was sharp and "cut like a knife" hence the choice of Bowie.

bowie knife - Definition from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

(I've heard the knife called buoy and bow-and-arrow 'bowie', but never heard anything other than the bow-and-arrow David Bowie.)
