80GB+ FLAC player? - Page 4

Thread Starter
I just wanted to bump this as I didn't get round to buying a new portable player last year, however I'm looking into buying one now.

Have there been any new players released in the last year that satisfy my criteria?

New? No.

The ultimate would probably be a gigabeat X30 upgraded to a 120gb samsung 5mm drive. Running rockbox, of course.

But good luck finding a gigabeat X outside of japan.

I'm thinking of the ones people have already mentioned:
- Cowon A3 (80 GB)
- Cowon Q5W (80 GB)
- Archos 5 (60 GB - 250 GB)
- Archos 7 (160 GB / 320 GB)
- Pacemaker 666 (60 GB) - more of a artist's portable mixer + DAP
- iPod 5.5 + Rockbox

You'd probably be better off with a iPod if you're not looking to play videos or surf the web, but wouldn't mind the lower battery life (10+ hours). Otherwise, if you don't mind the higher price tag, larger size (and heavier), and would enjoy the longer battery life, any of the Archos or Cowon players would suit your needs just fine.

I wouldn't suggest the Pacemaker unless you plan on using its other features.

Why not the other gigabeats?

How about the H140 with a 80GB Hard drive loaded with RockBox?

The X is as small as an S with the sound quality and battery life of the F. It's precisely the same hardware as the F, just in a smaller package.

They're just impossible to find outside of japan, is all. Like the gigabeat P, it never really showed up on this side of the international date line. - but it runs exactly the same rockbox bootloader and binaries as the F does.

ipod 5 or 5.5 gen with rockbox and then install the 240 gig hdd from rapidrepair and you are off to the track

I've been running my Gigabeat F 120GB mod for over six months, now. I had tried a mod of the Gigabeat S at one point, but the sound quality of the headphone out is pretty bad compared to the F. The F40, with the larger backplate to take a dual-platter drive, is fairly common on eBay. But, you still need to get an adapter for the larger drive. (see my 11-17-2008 post for details).

The F is a bit dated cosmetically, but it sounds very good and it's drag-and-drop heaven with Rockbox on it.
