i learn a lesson about sub harmonic frequency cancelation

well i am somewhat of an expert on the subject. really. i am also somewhat of an idiot when it comes to my own laziness.

i have a rather high end bookshelf/sub system in my bedroom.
the gs1000's have been plugged into an amp which is plugged into my dac, as is the preamp feeding the loudspeaker amp.

the gs1000's have sat on a table 2 feet from my ears. whenever the loudspeakers were played so where the gs1000's, fed from the same source.

i was really unhappy with the performance of the loudspeaker system.
yesterday i unplugged the gs1000's from the amp while the loudspeakers played. within 1 minute i nearly fell out of bed. the difference was beyond drastic. of intrest is that my friend the cat also promptly noticed this. it was like i dumped a pound of catnip on her. she went nuts.

just goes to show. my own stupidity. feel free to call me an idiot. i have missed out on hundreds of hours of loudspeaker bliss due to this simple but drastic mistake of mine.

i figure most of you know know about this. i posted this not to look like a fool but to help maybe the one other person in the world that has this issue and does not realise so.

incidentally, this is somewhat the same principle that the bose noise canceling technology we all hate is based on. no wonder we hate that, lol.

hiding my head in the sand now,

Yep, phase cancellation can ruin the sound of a system. This is why room acoustics are so important. I listened to a $10K+ system yesterday that sounded awful, and it was almost completely due to the untreated boominess of the room.

room acoustics will play a large role in the overall sound of a system. however, what i did in practice is to employ an active phase cancelation device. if one were to do as i did they would behold the same active phase cancelation technology. playing back the same source with no delay at a closer distance and at a lower volume is all that is required to achieve this phenomenon. what in fact is actually acomplished by doing this requires a rather complex explanation. in a word it will make a system of any kind sound "terrible".

i really always knew this was the case i was just so incredibly lazy i couldn't be bothered to unplug my headphones on the table next to me
