Sony and Linear PCM

I was going through the manual for my Sony s615, and wanted to know what is Linear PCM?
Standard 16bit, 44.1kHz *.wav files methinks.
as pure a 16bit stream as possible - i see we have the same portable... sorry i hate it for some reasons. it sounds heavently and records very well (that is the only way i can use it) as i don't have windows on an unemulated drive.

the usb does not work when i use vmware for the sony... shame. anyway, wonderful sounding player if a bit cheap looking.

Yes, Linear PCM is uncompressed full CD quality audio. 16bit 44.1khz and one would HOPE that it creates an actual *.wav file but you can't trust Sony. Hi-MD recorders, for instance, can record in linear PCM but you have to go through Sonic Stage to get a wav file out of it... grrr... This recorder you're referencing most likely records straight to wav files.

Quick question and a little off topic, I will be getting a 600 series player very soon. My question is which is better a 320kbps mp3 or 192kbps WMA( sound qauality and close to nuetral as possible)?
320k MP3 from a good encoding program should be quite a bit better than any 192k WMA.

another md collector eh? i have had so many units int he past (okay, only about 8) but i love md but hate it at the same time. it has always been marketed with lies, but i love the new sony for creating very good sounding players with a bit of hiss. they are fast, can record etc. but if you don't live in usa, they only work with windows - which i don't bother ever using - or don't have... for shaem!

mp3 at 320 should be very good indeed. but i would suggest even better than that: vbr recording of mp3. at 320, when the stream is not even using 320, it will use 320 so you are not gaining quality over vbr 0, just space.

What are ye talking about. The Sony s615 doesn't record.
mine records. that is the only way i can listen to music. i have a cable that lets me record.
You mean you can transfer music to it. Not record.
no, i record with a cable ... line in recording in real time. i have no way to transfer without recording.

anyway, don't believe me if you don't want to. you can record in atrac 3 plus from 64 or 48 to 256 and pcm linear at 1411kbps. they all sound great. (for their respective uses)

I assume that you're talking about the Japanese market NW-A6XX model. Sony has relased the non-ATRAC capable NWZ-A6XX in most of the world. The NWZ models are not ATRAC capable and do not have line-in recording capabilities.
yes i have the one released here in japan. bloody waste of time other than recording... i cannot use the software - so it is only a recorder for me.

strange that they would take out the recording ability of the thing - that is one of the reasons i bought it... now i have get a new os to use this thing. oh well, at least it records

so the sony in america plays linear pcm - but does not record it? why would anyone choose to use that? how do you even get music into linear pcm with it? the american version does not use sonicstage. are you sure the american one does not record? makes not sense to offer llinear pcm playback without ability to record it.

it must just be a firmware thing. i wish they would upgrade the firmware so i can drag and drop

I didn't know there was a version of these that can record. I still use a HiMD for recording. Whats the model number of that unit shigzeo? Does it have a special line in cable?
