how important are matched tubes

Hi, I have recently bought a used musical fidelity x-can v2. I wanted to try some different versions of the 6dj8 type tubes. The amp uses two of these type tubes one towards the front and one towards the rear of the amp. How important is it for the tubes to be matched? I am new to this type of hybrid amp and I am not sure if the tubes act in tandem or individually. Thanks any help would be appreciated.

It depends on the tubes function. If you're talking push-pull or output power tubes, then yes, they should be matched.

With pre-amp/driver tubes (like your x-can) it doesn't hurt to have them matched, but it really isn't necessary. Now, there are some that will tell you yes, have them matched, and others with my viewpoint.

It's really up to you. If you have a pair that isn't matched, no worries, throw them in a give it a listen. If you're more comfortable with knowing they're matched, then most places will charge you a few bucks to match pre-amp tubes, or if you're going NOS, just make sure you're picking up matched pairs.

Sorry, thought that I'd also add that if you start looking for some matched pairs make sure to check out how closely the place you're buying them from matches them. In my opinion, if you're paying extra to have them matched, it's better to have them matched at say 5% then 10%.
