I have about $200 to burn and i want to get a good 5.1 surround sound system. The speakers will go on my desk and i will use it for LOTS of music listening on my computer and for my xbox 360. I really like sound quality (music all in 320kbps mp3)so does anyone have any suggestions? I am not sure how logitech stands up.

What other gear are you using? You might try an actual home theater solution...

Pioneer 600W 5.1 Surround Sound System For XBOX 360 - HTS-GS1 ($129.99)

Pioneer 860-Watt Home Theater System, HTP-2900 ($199.99)

Those are great deals given your price range, and they allow for later speaker upgrades.

For the price, it's probably a good starter surround system. Since you have a multi-channel sound card, you'll have two choices for connection: analog or digital output. For analog, you'll need to run three 1/8" stereo to two RCA Y-cables from the back of the sound card to the appropriate inputs on the back of the receiver. The digital (optical or coaxial) output requires a single connection from your sound card to one of the receiver's digital inputs; this is probably the simplest way.

an this would be better than say a logitech z5500? im assuming a receiver is better than desktop speakers

The Logitech Z-5500 Digital might be a good choice as well, since it's capable of performing its own 5.1 channel conversion.

Or, you could route your Xbox 360's digital output to your X-Fi's digital input, then use the sound card's outputs to whatever speaker system you want. That way, you aren't limited to hardware decoding on a receiver or a pair of speakers.

Go with the pioneers, for sure. Personally I wouldn't do the logitechs, but that's just me.

i have Logitech Z-5500 speakers and they sound pretty good, alot of peeps don't like logitech for some reason (prob bought a $10 headset and it crapped out on them) but they have amazing support unlike what people think
