HiFiMAN HE400
By now I think most of us are familiar with the history behind the HiFiMAN HE-series headphones. What started with a single model has grown into a full...
I was in Japan and was looking at headphones to buy. I had a cheap budget of about 4000 yen or circa $40. I bought this headphone because it was on sale for $30 and was very good looking. It was...
Simply put, these headphones are one the best values in the audio world. They've praised time after time, and I now know why. These are my 2nd pair of quality grade headphones (after the V6),...
Hi Guys,
this is my second review on a new earphone, just in time that my friend is looking for a good earphone, I was recommend him to look for this Final Audio Design brand.

The following thread was hijacked so I have deleted my original post. Feel free to discuss the Stax headphones here. I will repost my observations on 7 dynamic phones I auditioned for my use.
Why am I not surprised? I owned the "cheap version", the MDR-CD1000's for a while, and they are indeed lovely. But have you compared any of them to electrostatics? Check out a Stax (whatever corresponds to the Lamda these days) and you'll think the CD3000's are tadpole ****.
Originally posted by JMedeiros I'm hoping some electrostats will be at the NYC meet. I would love to hear them.

That is in no way, of course, a knock on the CD3000's. No dynamic phone, however constructed, can match the better electrostatics. It has to do with the physics of a moving coil vs a thin diaphragm. The moving mass of the Stax is much smaller than any moving coil can ever achieve.
Good job, great review.
It seems CD3000 will be the phone for me too.
Would you compare the K1000 with CD3000?
I love how the K1000 sounds, but sometimes after a long listening, it became too cool, too much detail for me.
I hope CD3000 got more "relax" sound

I'll admit I'm a little jealous that you could afford to get all of these headphones and be able to compare them at the same time, hehe.
I'll admit that I am a bit horrified that I laid out all this cash this month. It was a good month, but no way could I afford to keep all these.I will lose some in resale, but it was nice to have the goods here to compare. I consider it an investment in longtime sonic pleasure.
Kind of like I was renting them all till I found what I liked.

Great review! I'm glad that others hear what I hear with regards to the CD3000s and the K1000s, so that I know I'm not crazy....well, not too crazy! Both are truly excellent headphones......enjoy.
Hi,
Nice impression!! It is nice to know that you pick the CD3K over others (so I don't need to upgrade). Anyway, I was a bit surpised on your W1000. I thought that the W1000 has a tighter bass, and a very good high. I never heard it, but I thought they sound quite good, and better than the HD600 w/ Cardas.
Originally posted by JMedeiros The W1000s were really my least favorite of the four. It's the sharp sounding top end....
I just think the other phones paired better with the Corda to my ears. I have a feeling that a tubed amp might tame the shrillness and the slight artificial sound I was hearing.
John
We have another owner complaining about the overly bright highs of the W1000, including myself of course. I absolutely agree with you JMedeiros and I did think about getting a tube amp for the woodies but its hard to find a good tube amp that will match well with low imp. phones (without burning a hole in my wallet). For some reason, i am begining to like my woodies now more then ever and it is growing on me. I didn't like them even after they hit their 100+ hour mark (now its at 500+) so I am not sure it has anything to do with burning in. I am not a believer in burn in anyway so I think I am just getting accustomed to their sound. Another thing I noticed is that I must listen to these phones at low level in order to avoid the ear piercing highs. Someone suggested to me maybe the highs are distorted slightly. Very possible, but don't know for sure. Try to listen to them again at very low level for five minutes or so then start to adjust the volume slightly. This will give your ears time to adjust and you can protect your hearing at the same time.

Yup, that's exactly what I had to do the past week or so in order to be able to listen to them.
