Sansa Clip with expensive phones?

Thread Starter
Just got the clip and I really love it. Incredibly small and lightweight, easy to use, outstanding sound quality (matches my 1st gen shuffle), and more than enough space for my purposes. Everything I need.

I was wondering though... has anyone tried the clip with pricier phones like SF5 Pros, UM2s, ER4Ps etc? I'm tempted to take the plunge for some SF5s eventually, to replace some already excellent MylarOne X3is. However I'm not sure if I'm overrating the clip's SQ/amp. Is this a good idea, or is pairing $200 phones with a $60 DAP just silly?

Thanks in advance.

first, i need to say the SF5P's are not much of an upgrade from the X3's. I had a pair before and I would the difference in sound does not warrant the difference in price.

That being said, they'll sounds every bit as good with the Clip.

My Future Sonics Atrio M5's (that awkward name again!) pair with my Clip very well. Ultra-portability and excellent sound. The Clip should drive a lot of nice 'phones well.

I have a PK1, which you might or might not think as a pair of high end phones (I personally do, and I think it trumps IEMs' fish tank sound). The PK1 is also known for needing an amp to drive it properly.

I've also paired my Clip with the ATH-AD900. It's not one of those cans that need an amp to sound good, but it's a full-sized circumaural.

I'm happy to say that the tiny Clip does an admirable job with both of them.

I use er4p (and s via cable) and shure se530's with the clip and the sound quality just blows me away, the sound stage is incredible.

You are not being silly pairing expensive phones with the clip.

My SE530s sound spectacular with my Clip. Fantastic player.

er4p + clip = excellent sound

Another vote for high-end IEMs with the Clip (no amp). The Clip does sound very nice.

I should be receiving my Clip this week sometime. I just wish it supported FLAC. What bit rate do you encode your music at?

I am thinking about 320 (the max) bit rate, what do you think?

I will be using a Sennheiser Px100 headphone.

Also currently all my music is encoded in FLAC, is their a free program out there that i can use to convert my music to mp3 format?

Thank You.

cdex might change it from flac to mp3, eac may do also, I have no experience of swapping around formats once encoded but I do know that those two programs at pretty good at what they do, with eac being far more featured.

p.s. they are both free

I'd go for LAME's V0 preset. It's indistinguishable from 320, but a lot smaller.

Many would argue that V2 is also indistinguishable, but I've heard differences on demanding recordings (like Sunn O))) or certain classical pieces).
