Does this mean that it won't be possible to use it as a standalone DAC for high-res?

I'm intrigued yet skeptical of the difference between the two outputs. Is there anyone else who can support his findings?

Also, does anyone know where to get inexpensive TS to RCA cables?

There could be a lot of reasons why the 1/4" outputs might sound better. Larger connector surface area, typically larger gauge cable, greater physical separation between channel wires, etc.

You could build your own cables, have someone on the forum build them, or ask a company like Blue Jeans Cable to build them. On a lower budget, use a regular pair of RCA cables and buy two RCA female to TS male adapters.

Guitar Center or similar stores usually carry a brand called HOSA.
