Does a Dock Line Out work with the iPhone?

post #1 of 14

Title says it all, but would a dock line out work with the iphone? Can I still receive calls? Does it disable some features?
Thanks

yes, it works. I haven't tried answering calls, i'd guess it would ignore the speakers for phone audio.

you have to get one that works,

mine up with activate aeroplane mode, yes or no

no = calls
yes = no calls

no sound from speaker

gives better sound as well

Line out docks work with the iPhone, but only if properly wired to do so. Note that the iPhone has a different dock pinout than previous iPods (thanks Apple), so a LOD for iPod will most likely not work on iPhone.

However, despite the difference in pinout configurations, LODs *can* be wired to support both the iPod and iPhone simultaneously. I know for a fact that ALO knows how to make their LODs to support both but you need to request it specially. Also, the SendStation mini dock supports both.

I am awaiting delivery of the sendstation dock, but currently enjoying my RSA predator hooked up to my iPhone through line out, by using the white docking cradle that came in the iPhone package. This works fine until my smaller dock arrives. You can opt to turn the phone into airplane mode to prevent RF interference, however I found the phone to buzz very infrequently when still in "phone" mode. I did not notice any GSM buzzing at short intervals like with some setups, I only heard the GSM buzzing if my phone was checking email or a SMS message was coming in.

I am currently using Shure SE530 IEMs, and they pair nicely with the Apple dock to my pred. If I use my SE530s straight from the headphone out, the noise floor (hiss) is pronounced even when playing music. I find the predator to be dead quiet at normal listening levels. I point this out more to substantiate how much of an improvement using a line out is, rather than to promote the predator. Its not that I don't like the predator, I do, but it's more that it seems there is an almost religious-style debate surrounding the predator and pico at the moment that I'd rather stay out of. Let's just say that I enjoy my equipment, which is a great state of mind to be in--sometimes I feel bad for the folks that are so wrapped up in the eternal chase of the best amp that they forget to stop and enjoy what they have.

Anyhow, yes the line out on the iPhone is a noticeable upgrade over the headphone output, especially with hiss sensitive IEMs. I never really was bothered by the hiss with larger more hiss insensitive cans like my BeyerDynamic DT770-80s.

When using the line output, if a call comes in, the iPod will still pause any music currently playing and the phone will ring through the line out; not the phone's speaker. It's the same behavior as if you have headphones plugged in when a call comes in. Note that oddly you could carry on a conversation like this, as the phone's mic works as per normal. So often I have been in my car, listening to music with the iPhone through my car stereo, when a call comes in. The music fades away and my car stereo starts to "ring." If I do not unhook the iPhone before I answer the call, I'm thrown into some weird ultra-speakerphone where the sound from the call is eminating from my car stereo (and usually quite loudly!)

They must not all be that way, because mine (USB+lineout) does absolutely nothing when plugged in.

No they all do not. The PocketDock AV does not. The PocketDock Line Out USB does. You sound like you have a PocketDock Line Out USB, so if yours does not all I can think is that they made a design change at some point, because they explicitly state it supports iPhone now.

that's the very one I have, its a treat compared to the headphone out

TF10 is at just the right volume via line out (-attenuator) which is a plus

I have the Pocket Dock line out USB, yes. I purchased it in April or May of last year, so they must have revised it between then and now. So anyone who is considering buying one should watch out for old stock!

When you plug it into the iPhone, does the line out work immediately, like with the dock, or do you have to power cycle the phone like with the ALO cables?

I just received my SendStation PocketDock Line Out USB today, and it works perfectly with my iPod 5th Gen, Nano Video, and iPhone. When I plug it into my iPhone it works immediately (as with the other iPods), I just get a message that asks if I want to go into no-RF mode.

Any particularly good options for ordering? I'm tempted to pick up another to have a functional line out.

can you control the volume w/ the sendstation pocketdock?

i tried the line out w/ the apple docking base, but the volume seemed to be at full volume, and i could not control the level at all.

No, the PocketDock AV sends out a line level signal. This line level signal should then be sent to an amp, which would normally have it's own volume control. In the case of my car, I use the pocketdock to hook up to my Toyota's "AUX in jack" and then I control the volume on the stereo (headunit) itself. At home, I have the line level go into my RSA Predator, which I use to control the volume.

I think it's safe to say that the performance of the pocketdock is nearly identical to that of the Apple dock, just smaller.

ty for the repsonse.

that makes it pointless for me to use the line out as a replacement for the headphone jack since i just want to use it on the go. sometimes it's whisper quiet, and sometimes its loud ..like at the gym. i need to be able to control the volume somehow.

i guess i'll stick w/ the adapter

Does anyone know if the pocketdock can be used as a USB DAC? Can it be attached to a laptop's USB port and deliver a line level audio output?
