Logo Contest Finalists. Time to vote! - Page 3

guys congrats to alot of great art and thanks for the work that was put in. I am dissapointed to see a select few whine about some of the choices but oh well. At the end of the day we all discussed the merits of each submission and picked the ones we liked best. Narrowing down the field actually took a few hours and lots of heated discourse. No one likes to lose after working on something for some time but at the end of the day we established a contest set up parameters and we were open on how the selection process would work.

As far as logos created in "Paint" or that took less work than the others, we aren't artists. We didn't look at a single image and try to figure how long it took to make. We looked at every image as representing the event and how they'd look around the event. In the end you can look at any entries you didn't like as the extra selections we included.

I deleted my earlier, attempt at humor, drunken post voting for the best entries (whether they made the finals or not - none did), because I felt that could be construed as being a sore loser as I was one of the contestants (though most of my 'best' selections were from other members). Perhaps for others this also isn't the best time or place to make disappointments public for the same reason.

But now that ALL those publicly stating criticism have been dismissed as whiners, I have to respond. If the critics should evaluate their motivations for speaking out, so should those assuming there is no merit and it's just whining. It's a small contest. A decision was made. That's that. It's not a big deal, but that doesn't though mean the decision wasn't wrong. At least a subset of entries were public during the entry process, and there are at least some of us that take design at least as seriously as audio. And without embarrassing any of the designers, I would absolutely love to privately hear the justification of some of the finalists. This isn't anger speaking. It's personal and professional confusion. And for those with a 'it's all subjective' thought creeping up.... stop right now, because design isn't.

None of this is remotely a big deal. But could we back off dismissing all the criticism out of hand? That certainly bothers me more than the contest itself. Those entering knew they could fail or loose. Those judging knew their decision could be questioned or even gotten wrong. If members in either group were too weak to handle the heat they shouldn't have taken the job. And if the judges time should be respected (as it should), so should others.

I agree with this post. I too would love to hear the criteria used to select the finalists, because I'm passionate about design, and some of the finalists selected shouldn't have even been considered. I'm not particularly disappointed because I did not make the cut, I'm more disappointed at the inconsistency of the judging.

Please go start your own competition and stop ruining it for the rest of us trying to have fun.

Dam, how can people be so cruel.

First of all, I don't want to ruin anyone's fun. I'm sorry if I have. But speaking as a designer I wouldn't have considered some of them, my opinion may be harsh but that's how I plainly feel, I don't care if none of my entries were selected, it was fun designing them and seeing what others came up with. I really wish that there would be a similar competition next year because at the end of the day I enjoyed it, and I'd definitely enter again if I had another chance.

Gentleman, just because an entry was not chosen, do not think that artistic merit was not recognized. There were more than a few entries we thought were artistically stunning, but were not what we were looking for as a logo (some would have made great posters, etc.). It's pretty much that simple. Seven people sat down together, went through every entry multiple times, created slide shows, had discussions, and chose what we liked for our purpose, but were also sad that some, which we loved, just didn't fit the bill. As the contest creators, we reserve the right to make these decisions, were clear about that from the beginning, and are pleased with the final selections.

I personally want to thank all whose talent and hard work led to the final eight. I'm excited to learn which of the final entries will become the CanJam '08 logo. Let the voting go on!

There's nothing wrong with drunken posting.

Well, except for me.

Nice entries, I totally forgot about this! I would've submitted one, but some of these are acceptable

Instead, some I wasn't expecting to get close to the top eight are winning.

Then again, maybe I just have a bad Saturday (No, I just do) and I'm whining too much.

I agree I was stunned to see these were the finalist. Not saying these are not good, but their was some ones in the thread that deserved to be in there. Did the judges say they were drinking while they chose. AHHH maybe that was it

Or maybe we collectively just had diifferent opinions then some of you as to what we liked for the logo. I know that might hard for some of you take but i suggest it as a possibility.

I wanted to take this moment to thank those who posted negative responses for ruininng what was supposed to be a fun activity and diminishing the contributions of the finalists.

I vote that this poll be extended until my birthday (the 16th) when I will surely be drunk.

Either way, I will raise a bottle of fine ale (several bottles) to the Florida crew.

Here-here!

The negative comments really are uncalled for. This isn't your contest, the judging took place already and they picked based on specific criteria. Besides, the organizing staff picked these entries.

I really like the simplicity of 3. It would be even better without the fade technique mentioned earlier in this topic, though still a great entry.

Well said! My feelings exactly. So sad.
