I want to know if you guys listen to your 963 with upsampling on most of the time, upsampling off? Which sound do you prefer?

How Do I listen to it?

I do not hear it in a box
I do not hear it in my socks
I do not hear it in a trough
I do not hear the sample off

And,When I turn my player on
The music rings liks disks in tron
If only I could find a tree
where money funds my old Hob-b

I jump and praise and hoot and hollar
When disks I love run through my palor
I sit and cry and and weep and moan
When train blows on his sax-o-phone

For this is time I can reflect
'Bout all the forum love I get
And when It comes my time to listen
I set the sample to on position

Upsampling is the whole point, and what makes this player an incredible bargain!

My default setting is upsampling on at 192 kHz. I generally flip it on and off a couple of times to decide which way I prefer. I also flip between 96 kHz and 192 KHz but this is a rarer phenomenon.

My impressions so far is that on well recorded disks 192 kHz is preferred unless the disk is musically complex, then I generally prefer upsampling off. Poorly recorded disks generally sound, to me, a lot better at 96 kHz or off depending on how bad the transfer really is. There are always exceptions which does keep it interesting

When I use the 963's analog out for CD, it's always set to 192 kHz upsampling (I just don't care anymore). But most of the time I use my Bel Canto DAC2 and therefore have to switch upsampling off to provide the original 44.1 kHz data for the external DAC, which by the way upsamples them to 24/192, too.

On those discs that you prefer 192, what exactly do you get with and without upsampling?

On studio recordings I notice a better seperation of instruments and on live recordings I notice a better seperation and localization of instruments. On both types of recording there appears to be an "ease" to the reproduction that is not as evident with the oversampling. Overall it is, but to a lesser extent, the same difference I notice between redbook and SACD.

When I was doing some player caparisons I noticed some brightness on older recordings (Led Zeppelin BBC Sessions in particular). Tube roller mentioned that upsampling contributes to this and should be turned off if the recording is bright or harsh. I will have some time this weekend to test this recommendation.
