Not being able to control volume would drive me nuts. If you can spend $3k on a CD player, why not get an amp?

Or, you could get an XA777ES and have Dan Modwright install stepped attenuator directly into the player.

Of course, that would run significantly beyond even the $3000 limit, but you would probably have the best source on Head-Fi.

I beg to differ, a way of controlling the volume is a NECESSITY! I might try and put a potentiometer between the cans and the CD player.

Where can one buy an XA777ES for $2000.00? Or are we talking used? I havent seen them under $2500.00

You can get them at www.oade.com for $1900 shipped IIRC. I know it is not more then $2000 though.

Thanks RVD. I wondered if it might be Oade selling them for that price. Great people, great place to buy from. I've dealt with them for a few years and they have my highest recommendation.
