haha cool... I guess it's a no no then...

but I do have my old mini lying around somewhere.. what kind of battery does sit use? able to get it easily and cheaply?

Just do a search on ebay. Batteries are cheap for the ipod mini. Just be aware where the seller is located from when you order. May be someone overseas and take a few days longer to recieve in mail.

I bought my batteries from eBay too. I've been satisfied mostly with them, but some didn't have the capacity printed on them. That makes me skeptical about the claimed power rating. I bought 3 total because I was having some battery/charging issues at first.

Actually I'm having problems again, but I think I might have a mini with a bad charging circuit. I haven't had a chance to work on it though, so I've been using my iPod Video for a couple weeks

I have 2 minis that I can mix and match parts to make 1 working device. I'm going to swap out the mainboard when I get time.

where could one locate one of these new 64gb cf cards? would be sweet to have a 64gb ipod mini rockboxed!

Swapped the (click of death) harddrive and battery out on the 4GB 1g Mini I bought in ebay a while ago. Everything went smoothly (apart from me putting the CF card in the wrong way round at first) and now I have a 16GB DAP and am listening to The Who in FLAC. Thanks to PouncePony and everyone who made this mod.

congrats. did you have any problems? I dont have one but I am seriously considering it. I heard that rockbox can get wierd after the mod. like randomly freezing and such.

Here you go (click for bigger).


New battery, 16GB CF card, piece of cardboard from an Amazon package to keep the CF card from moving about and it all went back together without problem. Used the iPod Mini Fixit Guide and the Rockbox Utility to ensure it went as smooth as possible. Simple but very effective mod. Will keep an eye (ear) on it for a few days to see if any problems crop up.

Now, what to put on it?

ipod mini fixit guide and rockbox utility? what are these? do they ensure a clean install after modifying the mini? btw nice rig. what phones?

This is the Ipod Mini disassembly guide by IFixIt.com. The Rockbox utility is just a tool to help you put the Rockbox firmware on the Ipod Mini. I haven't yet bothered with Rockbox on my 32gig Mini just because majority of my music is 192-320 kpbs or VBR mp3. I use mine with a amp too so dont' need the nice EQ settings of Rockbox.
