Addendum: apparently, Bluetooth devices CAN support MPEG audio (including MP3 & AAC), apt-X (described as "near lossless compression) and ATRAC (that old Sony scheme used in Minidisc). However, the only codec they're required to support is SBC. Since both the receiver and the transmitter would need to support the alternate codec, and I've never seen anybody describe in a device the streaming protocol, my money's on most devices sending and receiving SBC.
I wonder if an audiophile grade BT receiver that supports all of the above and has a great amp could be produced small enough not to cause head strain. It'd also be great to know exactly which protocol your "Bluetooth" transmitter was broadcasting (and at what bitrate).
