So what's the word on the new Ultrasone HFI-780???? - Page 42

On a side note, I hope that one good Hifi store near me is getting the HFI-780 soon, can't wait to try them...
reading that now makes me wonder if i really wrote it. i can see how it was misinterpreted. i would have misinterpreted it too. sorry for that, that was my bad.
i didn't mean to say that people who like the 780's sound don't know anything about music. i was just really surprised by the fact that the 780 seem to be getting so much love and the 680 isn't getting nearly any, as i would expect it to be exactly the opposite on a forum like this.
so just to reiterate:
what i was trying to say, was that i'm surprised that people seem to prefer the 780 over the 680, as from my experience in most cases people who like boosted bass aren't exactly hi-fists nor do they care about sound quality much at all.
i was not trying to say that you're not hi-fists or that you don't know/care about sound quality even if you prefer the 780 over the 680.

dunno if any of that made any sense, it's kinda hard to explain for some reason.

I didn't think the 780 was gonna beat my D2000 in any way -- boy, what a nice surprise I got!

Now that you made me remember the impression of "punch" I was hit with (so to speak), as I have posted this, I actually can't think of a single way in which the D2000 SQ is better than the 780's.
Quite the opposite is true.
And I love my D2000.
But, *so far*, I now love the 780 better.
DAMN... now I feel bad that I ignored the HFI-780 on the FS forums... $185 seems like a great deal for such a great pair of headphones. How about compared to D2000 Markl modded?

Maybe the bass boost really isn't what it is touted to be and it is more in line with what bass should be. Also the HFI680, from my understanding, isn't available in the US, where many opinions are coming from.

the 580 is supposed to be even less bright and a little less bass and more efficient plus cheaper too

Go back to the chart that I put up comparing the 780 to the UE9. This will show that in the bass area the 780 is not as strong as the UE9. Some have suggested the 780 are a bit bright and you can see compared to the UE9 at about 6K they do contain about 6-8 db more energy. The UE9 has more energy at the peak above 10k than the 780. But in the bass region compared to the UE9 the 780 just can't keep up. The 780 has less energy in the upper-bass region by several dB.

I hope you guys wanting bass killers are not disappointed.

My thoughts exactly. I wouldn't say they are over-powerful in the bass department as much as they are more capable.

After 140 hours of burn-in I don't hear any sibilance in my pair. I never really heard any to begin with, but right out of the box the bass was weak and the highs were tinny and bright. That only took a few hours to change and now the bass is nice and the high are much more tame. I still listen mainly to loudspeakers and a couple subs, but these are growing on me.

Just my opinions. To each his own.

Thus more neutral and boring . Kidding, kidding.

hehehe, i'm sold on getting the 780s. modded or stock is the new question for me. It won't stop me from being interested in how the hfi580 sounds though. Some people I know don't want to spend the extra 50 bucks and knowing if the 580 is good or not would be great for that friend that needs a recommendation at that price bracket

Stock, I would say. See how they sound orignalwise. You can always mod in the future when not (completely) satisfied.

With all due respect, I find this tough to believe. My D2000s (stock) are killer, and my PRO 550s, though great, are nowhere near the headphone of the Denons. So, are these 780s better than the 750s and 2500s?

I am getting my 780s recabled by Ken. Just sent them to Ken today. I am going with the Jena cable 18g and a quarter inch plug.

I don't think that is tough to believe. You both don't possess the same ears and requirements when listening to headphones. Of course unless you are stating that you do, then I'm in awe . Everyone has their own opinions. Maybe you like Denon's and maybe he likes Ultrasones. What's so hard about that to understand?
