So what's the word on the new Ultrasone HFI-780???? - Page 40

I have to say, with 145 hours on the re-cabled HFI-780 the treble is less sizzly than my stock ones were at 250 hours, and seems to be heading in the right direction. The Diode board must play more havoc with the sound than we guessed.

I am having my personal set re-cabled with 18G Jenna Lab Cryowire and 1/8" plug, but they haven't shipped back yet, was considering balanced instead to run from the Apogee mini-DAC. However, the Vampre Wire re-cabled are simply stunning with the DV336i and iBasso D1 with the current tubes and opamps.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Diodes, while a good source of protection, are not a good thing and I remove these in anything I have worked on, including dac boards etc. They are in places to protect again hooking up the DC wrong, voltage spikes that can ruin transducers etc but being careful is my best way to go. I need to remove them from my 750's.

I just sent mine off today to Ken for the cable and ear cup modifications. I am right now getting the vampire but am thinking of already emailing him about the Jena wire instead.

I asked for opinions from someone that has heard both. I know one person owns both and is currently burning em in.
Woops. I was quoting skip2 yet it didn't show up. Weird. Skip2 needs to realize that US buyers can't purchase these. Also the fact that he says that people who want the HFI780 over the HFI680 have no knowledge of sound is a bit disconcerting. Everyone looks for different things in their taste in music.

i got the info i'm talking about from sommercable's website, who are the german distributor of ultrasone.
Ultrasone headphones
Ultrasone headphones

also i would be really grateful is someone could measure the inside diameters of the pads on their hfi780 or hfi680 (width, height and depth)

I've been calling them ALO-780

So, setting the volume for continuing the burn-in on the shiny new 780's, I found amazing results!
The "highs" track showed me stuff that usually only my Grado RS-1's would show!l
The "lows" track showed me a low bass note SQ that only my deep-cup Darths have matched!
The female vocal mids are sweet!
I am stunned...and happy as a clam in mud.
If these can actually get any better with more burn-in, I could then live with these as the ONLY can I own, if it ever came to that.
Did I get an exceptional pair?
I just know I would not take $500 for these right now. No lie.
I feel like I would really like these. I'm one of those people who actually find that Grado's aren't that bright.

Is this guy for serious? I laughed out loud at his comment. I guess I have NO knowledge of any music because I like to hear some bass slam in my music. Everyone has the same taste in music as you skip2 because you have golden ears. And yes I am buying the 780's because the number is bigger.:ro lleyes:. Not the fact that I can't try out or buy the 680's here in America. Ridiculous. This is what happens when head-fi newbies think they know something, and speak up.

I actually think he has a point.
It is perfectly allright for you to like an enormous amount of bass slam or whatever, but that doesn't mean that the 780s are better suited for music listening.
Ultrasone designed the 680s for music listening and the 780s for movies and the like. With bigger bass than they consider optimal for serious music listening. At least that's what Ultrasone say about their own product.
It just might be that they know what they are talking about...
I'd like to know how Dex is doing with his 680s.

I think I just had an eargasm.
Reading this makes me want to order another pair. LOL !

Well personally I think ricepicker has more of a point, even though I don't condone his ways of chastising. If I like bass slam in my music, that means the 780's will be better suited for music listening FOR ME. Not for everyone. Why is that music listening always has to be critical and the headphones analytical? That takes the fun out of music, in my opinion, especially the kind I listen to mostly (Rock music). I just don't think it's anybody else's business to say that my way of listening to music is wrong, and imposing their definitions of "suited for music listening." Anyways, the day will come when I can hear my 780's when they actually arrive! It might even be the case that they don't have enough slam for me. In that case, the 680's will be WORSE than the 780's for music listening to me personally. To put it simply, and to cut off my rambling, everyone has their own tastes.
